Chapter SEVENTEEN

Logan sat in his living room, if the tiny room that sat right off the bedroom could actually be called that. The sardine can of an apartment wasn’t much bigger than his college dorm room. It was cheap, though, and since his entire advance had gone to pay for studio time, musicians, and legal fees, he was basically living off the small salary he was drawing from the staff songwriter job he’d landed. It was a horrible feeling to know his intellectual property, his creativity, was being sold for pittance, just enough to live on. It was not so much a matter of feast or famine, and was far more an issue of rent or ramen far too often.

His feet rested on the small, rickety coffee table that looked like it had been pulled out of the dumpster at a thrift store after the apocalypse. The pizza, now half-eaten, rested beside one foot. He knew he should stuff it in the small refrigerator for lunch the next day, but he could not seem to bring himself to care much—not about the pizza he could barely afford and not even about the next day and whatever humdrumness it would bring.

Logan had never felt so empty in his entire life. He swung his legs off the table and walked toward the front door. Seeing Ashley again had done a number on his heart, and he couldn’t even think past the pain. He seemed to spend his existence longing to see her, then feeling worse every time he did. He felt suffocated and decided to step outside for some fresh air that he was sure would do little good.

A woman was leaning against the railing, looking out over the parking lot. She turned to him, her eyes wary. “Hey there.”

Logan nodded. “Hey.”

She gave him a long once-over. “I think I’ve seen you before.”

“Maybe,” he said, biting his lip. “I mean, it appears we’re neighbors... at least for now.” He bit his lip. The little thrill he usually got when people recognized him was notably absent. “I’m Logan.”

“Oh, yeah! You were with that Vodka Twist band or whatever it was.”

“Whisky. Whisky Lullaby,” he corrected, stifling an eye-roll. He turned to look at her. She was pretty. A bit older than him, but attractive. Enough so that he couldn’t exactly guess her age.

“Yeah, that. You’re solo now, though, right?”

“Yes, I suppose.”

“You know, I work in A&R, for a rival label,” she said, wearing a crooked grin.

Logan leaned against the railing as well. “Oh yeah? How do you like it?”

She laughed and waved a hand in the air over her head. “It’s my first week. Ask me Monday.”

“Will do. How does an A&R rep from a rival label know me?”

“I was scouting the Bluebird tonight.”

“Oh.” He grabbed the railing, as if for dear life. “Those weren’t, uh...my best songs.”

“No? They sound pretty good to me, real radio-friendly.”

His spine stiffened. “I guess that’s what counts.”

“That and whether or not the label hears a hit, radio-friendly or not.
