HOWARD ASKED me to put the dogs out on the porch since we had company, and after I did that, I joined the people in the living room. I walked up beside Kay and put my arm around her shoulders, and she reached over and covered my hand with hers.

“Everyone, I’d like you to meet Pete. Pete, this is everyone.”

I smiled wide and she gave me a pat before I walked around the coffee table to offer my hand to the first woman. They were all lovely, dressed to the nines just for a neighborly visit, with soft plump hands that smelled like lilac and rose water.

“Oh, Pete, darlin’, what is it you do?” Olivia asked with a flutter of lashes.

I gave them the ATF rundown, and then turned to Olivia’s daughter, Jill. “Pleasure,” I greeted her, making my voice lower than it needed to be.

She swallowed hard, I saw her, and she lifted her hand to take mine. “The pleasure’s all mine, Agent Lomax.”

“Pete,” I corrected her.

Her quick nod was cute.

Carver gagged softly behind me.

I didn’t squeeze Chris’s hand any harder than I had his wife’s, but he got all puffed up anyway, standing up and throwing his shoulders back. He was taller than my boyfriend but not by much, so maybe five foot eleven. I towered over him, and for once being the biggest guy in the room wasn’t a bad thing. I was intimidating the hell out of him.

Howard brought everyone drinks, and Carver sat and explained about his art gallery and where it would be on Beacon Street, which was the main drag, and the deal he’d gotten from the historical society on the building. He was going to refurbish it but not change it, and that was what they’d wanted to hear.

I followed Kay into the kitchen, where the woman I hadn’t met was still sitting at the table, with an iPad, file folder, various highlighters, and two syringes in front of her.

“Pete, this is my doctor, Dr. Anna Burke, from the Chandler Medical Center at UK.”

I offered her my hand, and she took it, her grip firm. “I’m actually a physician’s assistant, but I’m checking up on Mrs. Fleming as well as testing her motor skills today.”

“Is it okay if I sit?” I asked Kay.

“Of course, sweetheart,” she consented, taking a seat next to me, across from Anna.

Anna checked Kay’s vitals, got up and listened to her heart, took two vials of blood, and then did exercises where Kay had to follow along.

“Oh,” Kay said after a few minutes of looking at flash cards. “Do we have any water?”

She had asked me, not Anna.

“Do you want some water?”

“No, dear, do you?”

“No, I’m good.”

She turned to Anna. “Have we met?”

Anna pursed her lips. “Yes, Mrs. Fleming. I’m the PA for Dr. Patel.”

“Oh. And who is he?”

“Your primary doctor.”

“I see.” She sounded like she was getting worried.

That fast she was gone, and it was startling and scary, and if I hadn’t been right there to see it, I wouldn’t have actually believed there was anything wrong with Carver’s mother.
