Chapter Thirteen

Colors

I did indeed think on things as I rode. King Adrien’s men kept a rather significant distance from my back. Apart from Tristan.

Despite him yet again being worked up, that time very obviously frustrated with me, he didn’t leave my side to join the other men. I believed for a while that he was remaining near me out of obligation to his king, and perhaps that was at least part of it, but . . .

I liked what that said about him regardless. He could’ve put distance between us, certainly without compromising safety.

He didn’t.

I thought it silly and a bit ridiculous that he got so worked up by things. A bit frustrating as well. My father would’ve said that Tristan’s penchant for dramatics could’ve put actors on their stages to shame. It was a bit bad.

I wondered if he thought I was just as ridiculous as I thought he was, only in different ways. I never would’ve thought anyone might find me ridiculous in the way he seemed to, but . . .

I supposed it was possible. Perhaps he also thought me dramatic in that different way.

The thought of that put an expression on my face that caused Tristan to say, “If you smelled anything so horrendous to put such a face on you, I implore you to remember that pouch in your pocket. You’re carrying it for a reason.”

Though that reason was not to hide less-than-ideal scents, which hadn’t even crossed my mind, I did indeed remove the pouch of Solstice tea from my pocket and sniff it.

“There you go,” Tristan said. “You look much better when you’re smiling.”

“Then I must remember to never smile near you again.”

He looked at me, I believed to see if I was joking.

I was only somewhat proud of the length of time that passed before I felt the corners of my mouth tugging up.

His followed. “Dare I stop everyone now for a quick bite to eat?”

“Why would you not?”

“I fear stopping on a smile will only end badly. Every instance I get one, it’s followed fast by the opposite.”

“Perhaps because you quickly after say or do things such as imply a smile on my face belongs to you.”

“Ah, but a few of them have. It’s like paying with a special currency only you have. You handed it over just now then smacked my hand for reaching in a way that wasn’t precisely just so.”

I thought on that then said, “As guilty as I am and have been for assuming then pointing out you doing as much, you are for what you just said as well.”

He very clearly thought on that. “Touché.” He then glanced at me. “Is that your way of apologizing for your assumptions?” He glanced again.

I shook my head. “I am sorry for allowing my unrelated fears to give me preconceived ideas on your king opposed to waiting until meeting him to form my opinion. I’ll not apologize on any opinions formed from my brief and distant observation of his person.
