TWENTY-NINE

FRIDAY

“You should take Wolfe’s advice and stay home for another day.” Kane turned the Beast onto Main. “You’re not okay and I’m capable of handling the office, Jenna.”

The last thing Jenna had wanted was to get out of bed, but she had responsibilities and all of her deputies had made it to work injured at one time or another. Rowley still hadn’t fully recovered some six months after being shot by a crossbow bolt. He never said a word and did his job, but she’d seen him rubbing his arm to ease the discomfort. Being the sheriff meant she had to be titanium. She glanced at Kane and sighed. “I know you’re concerned about me, but everything is manageable with a couple of Tylenol. You work with your headaches, right? I’m needed in the office right now. I’m also the only person who can identify Wanda.”

“No, you can’t.” Kane’s face was grim. “Trust me, her own mother wouldn’t recognize her. I doubt Wolfe will allow you to see the body.”

Annoyed, Jenna shook her head. “You both need to stop protecting me. I’m the sheriff and I need to see the victim. It’s protocol. I’m the last person to have seen her alive, Dave. I owe it to her to at least give her a name.”

“She hasn’t got a face, okay?” Kane shot her a glance. “They figured it was you. I had to identify your body. Yeah, that bad. If you can recall what she was wearing, you can ID her clothes.”

Glad that they’d already dropped by the kindergarten with Tauri, Jenna turned in her seat to stare at him. “I gathered that but, yes, I’d recognize her clothes and boots. I also would recognize the restraint marks on her wrists. I figure she was chained up, but when I spoke to her she couldn’t recall anything more than four years previously. She had a nasty cut on her forehead, and I believe he hit her so hard he figured she was dead and buried her alive.” She chewed on her fingers recalling the blood-drenched filthy woman. “She was suffering memory loss and believed she was fourteen. The recent head injury must have caused the amnesia. We worked out she’d been chained up in his cabin for four years.” She punched the seat. “In my county. This happened under my watch, Dave. We didn’t even know Wanda was missing. I need to put this right and catch this monster.”

“Okay, okay.” Kane stopped outside the sheriff’s office and squeezed her arm. “We’ll find him. This time, we at least have a description and a general area of where he lives. It’s sketchy but it’s a start.” He unclenched her fist and kissed her knuckles. “We’ve had less to go on and solved the case. The other thing, Jenna: Crimes that happen in this county are never your fault. You can’t beat yourself up every time something happens to a kid. We have no control over other people’s behavior.”

Nodding, Jenna straightened her shoulders, ready to start another day.
