As if she were going to stay inside and let him face danger alone!

Piper grabbed the phone, lifted the crutch like a club and stepped into the darkness behind him.

“I told you to lock the door, not follow me.” Grayson’s voice was a low hiss, but he didn’t turn toward her.

“Aren’t you the one who always tells me there’s safety in numbers?” Piper’s voice was just as quiet, barely carrying over the pound of her pulse in her ears.

“Shhh!” As Grayson spoke, something crashed through the trees at the far end of the yard.

Piper screamed as a dark figure raced into the moon-bright yard.

It took only seconds for her brain to register what she was seeing—a deer. Not the masked gunman she’d expected. It took longer for her heart to sink back into her chest, for her arms to lower the crutch. By the time she did both, the deer had disappeared and silence had fallen once again.

“Well, that was exciting.”

“Go in the house, Piper.” This time Grayson took her by the arm and shoved her back into the house. The door slammed, the darkness inside more complete than that of the night outside.

She pushed the door back open, ready to ask Grayson what was going on, but he was gone, swallowed up by the shadows. “Gray?” Her voice wavered, whispering out into the silence. “Gray!”
