CHAPTER SEVEN

LUCY

I roll from my front onto my back and lay looking up at the ceiling; my cell phone pressed to my ear. It’s been almost six weeks since Hawk and I first had sex in the office, and I don’t think I’ve stopped grinning since.

“He’s just amazing, Beth,” I gush. “He’s so big and strong, but inside he’s really sweet too. Like the first time I went to his house, he said we’d order take-out, but when I got there, he’d cooked me dinner.”

“Right,” Beth says. “But you know this is going to end in tears, right?”

I sigh. Of everyone, I thought Beth would be the most supportive when I ended up confessing the truth about who Hawk really was.

“I’m sorry, Lucy; I just don’t want to see you get hurt,” she says.

“Hawk would never hurt me,” I say with total confidence.

“I don’t mean Hawk. I mean your dad. Have you worked out how to tell him about this yet?”

I haven’t. The truth is I kind of like the sneaking around. It makes our relationship feel kind of naughty like it’s forbidden.

“Do you tell your dad details about your boyfriend?” I reply.

“Of course not,” Beth laughs. “But my boyfriend isn’t anything serious. He’s just mister right now. My dad doesn’t need to know more than that. But you said Hawk is the one. That means, at some point, you have to tell your dad.”

“And I will. Just not yet.”

“What does Hawk think?”

“He wants to tell my Dad. He hates sneaking around, but he said he’d take his cue from me. But I don’t know how long that will hold up. He’s not really the kind of guy to sit back and let things play out. In the end, Hawk gets what he wants. And he wants to come clean with my dad.”

There’s another reason I haven’t told him about Hawk and me. I’m afraid of what will happen. He’ll be mad; I know that much. I’m sure I could persuade him to come around to the idea given enough time, but my worry is he confronts Hawk about it. Hawk is my dad’s oldest friend, and the truth is, I’m worried that if it comes down to a choice between my dad and me, Hawk will choose my dad. He’s told me over and over again that he will choose me but what if, when it comes down to it, he doesn’t?

I shake my head. I don’t want to think like that.

“I just want to live in the moment, Beth, and not have to worry about who will or won’t approve,” I say.

“Just don’t say I didn’t warn you,” she says.

She changes the subject abruptly, and I let her. The new topic is something I’m much more eager to discuss.

“So you’re a biker chick now then?” she laughs.

“I wouldn’t go that far. I don’t think I’d ever dare ride a bike myself, but riding with Hawk is fun. It’s so freeing; it’s almost like flying,” I say.
