Back home, tucked up in bed, Sophie used her iPad to look up some of the stories in the press about Dr Michaels. Zane had been right. There were a number of very lurid and derogatory descriptions of Angela’s mother. No wonder Angela was upset, Sophie thought, as she flicked through the news articles.

After a few minutes, she put the iPad on her nightstand and reached for Dr Michaels’s new book. She balanced it on her knees as she thought back to the briefing earlier that day. Rick had suggested perhaps the killer was a copycat of Dr Michaels’s infamous Playing Card Killer. Dr Michaels hadn’t warmed to the idea of a copycat, but if there was one thing Sophie had learned from Karen, it was that it was important not to dismiss any options until they were absolutely sure.

Five minutes later, Sophie was sound asleep, the book resting on her lap.
