Chapter Fourteen
When I got home last night, I wrote my own statement of events spanning the day of Karina’s accident, leading up to the present. I laid out all the facts and tried to make some sense out of it, but kept returning to what Donohue said. That my friends insinuated I knew more than I let on but had forgotten. Maybe they were trying to protect me, like I was with Matt about his drunk driving that night.
I could see how most, if not all of us, would seem suspicious, and when I lay the facts out, they’re all over the place with gaps of unaccounted time or second-hand accounts. I don’t remember everything about that night, and I’m sure we’ve all filled in some blanks on our own.
Karina said trust no one.
Donohue said trust no one.
But I’m not willing to give up on my friends.
I made a lunch date with Cassy and Liz today, and they were both shocked but happy I seem to be coming out of my depression. Cassy will arrive first. She’s always early, so I will be too, and I’ll ask her about the other night. I have to give her a chance to tell me the truth. Was she giving a statement with Matt that night, or were they somewhere else?
If they can be straight with me about what they told the detective, and what’s actually going on with them, I’ll tell them what I’ve been up to with the timeline I made last night and the meeting I have this afternoon.
If they lie to me, even just once, I won’t say anything.
I wrap my hair up in a smooth topknot and dig through my makeup bag for something that will help me look more put together than I feel.
Karina wore the perfect shade of cherry red, and I don’t think a lipstick could ever look as good on me, but I pull a red one out and smooth it over my lips. I pull on a floral summer dress my grandma made for me—one Derek hated—for the first time in six years and let it fall down just below my knees. Not as loose as it once was, but it works, and I smile at my defiant self in the mirror until I notice the lipstick doesn’t go with the dress.
I can’t pull it off. What was I thinking? Why am I trying to be more like her? I wipe it off before grabbing my purse and heading to the lunch date.
Cassy is standing at the front entrance on her phone as I arrive. “Sorry, just texting Matt to give the kids the mac and cheese I left in the oven for lunch.”
“It’s okay.” I turn to the hostess behind the counter. “Reservation for Tabitha Weaver.”
“Weaver?” Cassy shoves her phone in her purse, and the hostess guides us to our table. “Did you change it back?”
“Not yet, but it feels good to use it again.” I grin at her over my shoulder.
“Sounds good to hear again,” she calls to me.
