CHAPTER 5

Sarah

I’d let Jenson book the restaurant, but I shouldn’t have. I’d been thinking that we could meet at a diner or somewhere nice and open, maybe somewhere with overhead lighting instead of candles on the tables. He’d obviously had other ideas. The restaurant was the kind of place that you might take somebody on a very serious date. It had that kind of vibe that told you that many rings had been pulled out at its tables.

“The food here is great,” Jenson said to me, when he noticed me looking around the restaurant.

“I’m sure it is.”

“You know Sarah, it’s so good to see you again. I mean I gave you my number months ago and never heard from you. I kind of thought you must have lost it or something,” he said, as he looked at me with a confidence that said that my disinterest wasn’t a possibility.

“Yeah, I’m sorry about that,” I mumbled. “I guess I got busy.”

“You keep telling me that you’re busy, but I think you’re forgetting who you’re talking to. I mean this week alone I’ve been to eight different countries. How could you possibly be busier than me?”

I shrugged because I had no other answer to give him. Well, I had answers to give him, but I knew that his ego wouldn’t like them. “Actually, I don’t know if you remember,” I started because I wanted to change the subject, “but I told you on the phone that there was something I wanted to ask you.”

“Sure, I remember,” he said as he leaned in over the table and tried to capture my eyes with his, but I avoided his gaze.

“Good,” I said and I furthered my smile. “So, I was hoping that you might be willing to do an interview with me and my college partner for our midterm?”

He frowned at me for a moment. “You know I don’t do interviews,” he said as he shook his head.

I felt deflated for a moment. I’d been really sure that Jenson would do this for me.

“I suppose, though, if you could make it worth my while?” His eyebrows lifted and his hand started to graze across my knee.

I was frozen in shock. I could feel his hand as he started to creep it further up my leg and for a moment I couldn’t do anything to stop him. It was like the gravitational pull of earth had decided to only focus on me and it was making it impossible for me to even blink. The feeling passed, and I quickly jerked my leg away from him. “What do you think you’re doing?” I asked him with enough force in my voice to alert other people to our drama. I could feel their eyes turning to our table, but I didn’t care. “What? Do you think that you can just put your hands wherever you want and I wasn’t going to say something? I told you back on your tour, Jenson, I’m not interested in you like that.
