CHAPTER 5

Sarah

I felt bad from the moment I told him to leave. It had seemed like the right thing to do in the moment, but from the second the words had left my mouth I realized that I’d been wrong. I didn’t want Rob to go. In all honesty, I wanted James to go so that Rob and I could actually talk about everything that had happened between us and anything that could have happened in the future.

I watched him leave. I could feel every step he took away from me adding more pressure to the weight that was already pushing me down. I wanted to call him back over. I wanted to tell him that I’d made a mistake, but all I could do was watch him walk out the restaurant with a defeated slump to his shoulders that almost broke my heart in two.

“You made the right call,” James said, as he lifted up his glass as if I was going to toast to that.

“You know I’m not really sure that I did,” I said, as I took in the gloating twinkle in his eyes and the small smirk that had spread over his lips.

“Oh, believe me, you did,” he said cockily, as though he’d won the fight and there was nothing left to do other than collect his trophy.

“Why are you being so harsh? He only wanted to talk to me?”

“He came in and crashed our date,” James said with a look on his face that told me he couldn’t believe that he had to explain himself. “What did you want me to say? Here Rob take my seat I’ll go wait outside?” James added sarcastically.

“You know what, James? I never ever said that this was a date. I told you to pick a date, as in like a date of the month. And to be honest, even if this was a date, it would now be officially over.” I stood up and scraped my chair across the floor.

James looked shocked. He looked like he couldn’t quite believe what was going on. “You shouldn’t have led me on if you weren’t going to give it up,” he said with an icy tone that made me realize right then and there that he was not the person I was supposed to be with.

“Lead you on?” I asked him as I wrinkled my nose in disgust. “Don’t flatter yourself.”

I didn’t give him a chance to reply. I just walked out of the restaurant leaving him with the bill. I could feel a desperate pull in my chest as I headed back to campus and I knew that the only way I would be able to calm it was by seeing Rob.

When I got back to campus I called him, but he didn’t answer. I couldn’t leave things how they were. I couldn’t have gone to sleep that night knowing that he thought I didn’t want him. I walked across campus without putting any thought into where my feet were taking me.
