“Sure I can tell you,” he answered gruffly. “High blood pressure, heart murmurs and innumerable other disabilities—the blokes there in the hospital told me. Damn liars all of them. There’s nothing wrong with me, I tell you. I’m sound as a dollar—never been sick a day in my life. Not good enough for this man’s war—well, let them fight their old wars—who cares?” He pressed his foot on the gas and the car shot ahead.

Mary stared at him in consternation then put her hand on his arm. “I’m sorry, Sam,” she said softly. “You certainly look in the pink—tonight. And listen, darling, there’s no need of committing murder and suicide just because the draft board doesn’t know a good man when it sees one. Anyway, there are lots of ways in which you can serve your country right here at home, you know. Slow down, Sam, and turn off here. This is the way to ‘The Patch.’ ”

“Do you really want to go there tonight, Mary?” he asked, a note of pleading in his voice. Mary looked at the man sitting beside her and felt discretion to be the better part—under the circumstances. The experiment had been a failure; but at least she had tried. Now she would devote the rest of the evening to making herself as alluring and attractive as possible. She owed Sam that much.
