We’ve shared first kisses, first embraces, but this is finally the big one—the first date. I went with a classic diner, probably old fashioned but I have a sneaking suspicion it’s Kelsey’s first time being wined and dined since high school.

I run a little behind. I’m always on time but I’ll use traffic as an excuse, and I wanted to give her a little extra time to get ready. On the drive over it occurs to me I’ve never seen Kelsey in a dolled-up situation. Will she doll up? Do I care? She’s always worn nice dresses, professional attire...no makeup, no jewelry…just her is perfect enough.

The unknowns excite me more than anything as I rap my knuckles on her front door. A small bouquet of flowers in hand.

Oh yeah, I went that old-school.

Even with all my racings thoughts and ideas of how she’d look didn’t prepare me for the vision that opens the door. The flowers slip from my fingers when I see her.

I’ve heard of the little black dress. My ex wore black often, she’d been a tall athletic woman more obsessed with the gym than an iota of our love life. Nothing wrong with a woman who loves fitness, but Janelle only loved fitness. I’m far from trying to compare the two women, but it strikes me now that Janelle was the last woman I’d taken on the date and I’m just as unprepared as Kelsey may be.

Her hair is draped over her shoulder, pinned in place as it enhances her pale broad shoulders. Her black dress is a near identical color to her hair, leading my eyes to trail down to the sweetheart neckline, only held up by what I imagine is a strong bustier in accompaniment with the off-the-shoulder straps. The rest of the fabric clings to every inch of her and I have to pick my jaw off the floor as I find the hem at mid succulent thigh.

She’s not wearing heels and she’s not wearing a ring. Instead, a silver chain adorns her neck, her simple style shining through the glamorous look. Her grey eyes are rimmed with dark liner and lashes lengthened. Those delicate lips lightly painted with a soft plum color.

I scramble to pick up the floors, stammering as I greet her. “Kels…Kelsey, you look…” I swear I almost swallow my tongue. “Stunning. I…I mean, these are for you.” I hand her the slightly disfigured bouquet, a few flowers broken in half. She takes them, smelling the fragrant blossoms and smiling kindly.

“Thank you, Wes. Come in. I’ll get a vase for them.” I step inside, fanning myself feeling hotter than concrete in the hot Chicago sun.

Pull yourself together, you’ve still got the date to go through.

She’s as silent as a panther maneuvering around her house. It isn’t my first time here. We’ve worked at one another's houses before. I distract myself by noting the new art she’s adorned her walls with. She stays up to date on trends, and each room or wall of her house is dedicated to a particular art style or artist.
