BRONWYN

I DIDN’T FEEL ANY BETTER THE NEXT DAY. WHILE I WAS relieved it was Friday, I was still trudging along, as if my body wasn’t mine. I was out of place—more than usual. Even when I was invited to hang out with Mars and his friends, I turned them down. I didn’t want to pretend that everything was okay in front of Molly Grace.

Don’t trust Molly Grace.

Once again, Anais never told me why. It was getting exhausting even trying to trust her.

Maybe Lala was right. Maybe we do take after our dads.

That was a disturbing thought.

After school, I spent time organizing Lala’s basement with Dad. We were nowhere near done, but there was a clearer path to walk through and a steadily growing “Donate” pile.

“Bronwyn, maybe you should take a break,” Dad said. “It’s a Friday night. Go relax.”

The concerned look on his face told me I didn’t look so good. Better to lay in bed and let my immune system fight whatever bug I caught.

“Sure,” I said and stumbled up the stairs to my room. The blinds were drawn, a reminder that someone was still stalking me.

Do I know anything?

My head ached. I knew why no one swam, and that was it. Something about a dead girl from a long time ago.

Suddenly, I had an idea. I fished out Lala’s journal from under my bed. If that happened around her time, then she had to have heard about it, right? Maybe she even knew the person.

Or if it’s all a misunderstanding, I can tell everyone and maybe they’ll leave me alone.

It was worth a shot.

I opened it to the first page.

“This… is all in Spanish.” My shoulders dropped.

Spanish and cursive. I can’t read a word of it.

Frantically, I flipped through the pages. A few names and dates jumped out at me. At the very end of the journal was a section of clipped newspaper articles. Some were folded nicely and slipped in between pages, and others were pasted straight into the journal.

One was short and simple:
