CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

“I FOUND SOMETHING, Poco.”

“Yeah? What did you find? Did you find the son of a bitch who killed Adam?”

“No.”

“Then I do not give a fuck what you found.”

Zip should have anticipated that reaction. Poco had no patience. He inhaled sharply and soldiered on. “I think I found his truck, Poco. News says he’s a detective named Ed Runyon, from Mifflin County, wherever the fuck that is. Reporters say that’s unconfirmed, but they always hedge, right? Anyway, he shot up a kid last year, some football stud. I found a truck here, close to the Boone house. Mifflin County plates. Gotta be this Runyon guy’s truck, I’m thinking.”

Poco inhaled sharply. “Yeah, you may be right, might be his truck. But the news says Runyon is in the hospital, Zip. Go there and kill him.”

Zip sighed. “Look. I know this is rough, man. Adam is your brother, you love him, I get it.”

“He practically raised me, man.”

“I know, man. I know. But a hospital? That’s a lot of cameras and witnesses, Poco. Security cameras, you know? Probably cops parked outside Runyon’s door. Go there and kill him? That’s insane. But I got this, man. I have his truck, right? Gotta be his truck. You remember how we got Charlie? I’m gonna do the same thing.”

Zip grinned, because he could imagine Poco’s eyes lighting up with realization.

“That’s smart, Zip. You got one with you?”

“Hell, yeah. Got one in the glove box.”

“That’s good. That’s damned good. Do that, Zip. Sure. You are right. Hospital’s a bad play. Sorry, man. It’s … my brother is dead, you know? I can’t think, man.”

Zip moved the phone away from his face and sighed with relief. Then he returned the phone to his face and spoke again. “I get it, man. I cannot imagine how you feel.”

Poco gulped. “It hurts, man. It really hurts. So here is what you do. Follow this guy, kill this guy, I’ll make it worth your while. You know that, right?”

“I know that, Poco. I got this, man. This Runyon bastard? He’s as good as dead.”
