Chapter 18

The tension in the house the next morning was thick enough to cut. It felt like waiting for a bomb to drop, but no one had any idea when or where or what it might be. “We have to behave normally,” Joel said over breakfast. “If we just stay hidden here or in the clubhouse all of the time, they’ll be able to predict where we’ll be and it will be that much easier to hit us, if they plan to. We need to act as if everything is normal, but be much more vigilant. Try not to create any patterns. We need to take a variety of routes, change up our schedules.”

Clara nodded as Joel spoke, her face serious. Abel seemed to be off in another world, and Joel snapped his fingers, his voice tense. “Abel, I need you to pay attention,” he said, and it was clear he was making an effort not to yell. “Everyone’s safety is on the line here.”

“I heard you,” Abel said tersely. “It’s not all that different from what we discussed at the club meeting.”

“It bears repeating,” Joel’s face was expressionless as he looked between the two of them. “I need to know that this is being taken seriously.”

Abel opened his mouth, but Clara cut him off before he could say anything snappish in return. “Don’t worry, Joel,” she said gently. “We know this is serious. How could we not?”

Joel nodded. “Now, this coming Saturday night, there’s another of the club get-togethers. A handful of the members are going to be on watch, so no drinking for them. They’ll be pissed about it, but they’ll have to deal. Also, no fights or rough games like there was this last time. We can’t afford to have anyone injured right now if we can help it. Abel, you’re going to need to say these things with Cyrus at the next meeting. Coming from you two, it’s an order.”

“Got it,” Abel said. “A dry party for a bunch of the members and no roughhousing. Not going to do much for morale.”

“Better than getting killed,” Joel said dryly. “No morale left after that.” He sighed. “With any luck, the police will be getting close to making some arrests soon. Cyrus is going down to talk to James today, get some info on where they’re at. I’ve got to go with him and have his back just in case. I’m leaving an extra gun with you, Abel. Clara, today we’re going to the range to practice, and then you’ll be carrying one as well.”

Clara looked a little pale around the edges. “I’ve never shot a gun before,” she said weakly, her voice shaky.

“Then it’s time we changed that,” Joel said firmly. “We can’t be certain that there won’t be a moment where you have to protect yourself, and don’t count on anyone getting close enough for you to fight hand-to-hand.” He frowned. “Not that one practice session makes you capable of that, either.”

Clara stared at him. “Are you trying to scare me?”

“Yes.
