Chapter Six

The next morning, Maria arrived late at the office to find Guy and Jon sniggering over some online porn.

‘Can’t you two find any work to do?’ she snapped.

‘Sorry, boss, it’s just that this bird reminded us of that Suzy slapper everybody is talking about.’ He swivelled the monitor for Maria’s benefit, but she didn’t look up. She tugged at her suit jacket – bottle green, and every bit as boring as the rest.

‘You mean the girl my husband manages?’

‘Does he?’ Guy tried and failed to look surprised.

‘You know perfectly well he does. Look, could you put the kettle on, please?’

While Guy strolled off to the tiny kitchen, Jon printed out some emails. ‘The latest on the Mannings deal,’ he said, dropping them onto her desk.

Maria sighed. She had a splitting headache. Learning the truth about Ken and Suzy had led to a row that had kept her awake for most of the night.

‘What were you thinking?’ she’d stormed at Ken. ‘Preying on some poor, innocent girl, carting her off to the woods, plying her with vodka, forcing her to spill dirty secrets?’

‘She wasn’t that fucking innocent,’ Ken had snarled.

‘You seduced her! You made her come!’

‘Yes, and she hasn’t stopped since!’

‘Why did you pick her up that day?’

‘Because I was bored,’ Ken said. ‘Because you’re never here. You’re always too fucking busy.’

‘Perhaps you’d prefer it if I was too busy fucking,’ Maria retorted, twisting his words.

‘Maybe I would! You never used to be this obsessed with work. And you never used to be so stuck-up or such a frump, either!’

‘If you haven’t noticed, we’re in a recession.’ Maria ignored his attack on her personality and appearance. ‘I’m lucky to have a business at all. I almost lost it once and now I have to do whatever I can to keep it going.’

‘What about me?’ Ken yelled. ‘I’m sick of being stuck here all day with nothing to do. Domestic trivia about putting out rubbish bags and picking up milk does my head in. That’s why I was cruising round in the car that day, that’s why I offered Suzy a lift and engineered a diversion.’

‘So why don’t you get a job?’

‘Doing what?’ Ken snarled. ‘I’m not qualified for anything and I don’t have your business acumen. I just thought that running a little agency, hiring out totty to parties, would be a bit of a sideline, something to fill my time. I was doing OK until you poked your nose in.’

‘I didn’t poke my nose in! I answered your phone because you were occupied with the car as usual. You might at least have taken the phone with you, tried to look professional.’

‘Yeah, well …’

‘And you should have set Suzy up as a watcher by now – it was your idea, after all. She should have been paid too! You owe her big time. Her session in the community hall turned over a small fortune, and that was just one gig. No wonder you didn’t want any money from me – you didn’t intend to spend any.
