Chapter 27

Anton finished plugging the computer into the network and returned to his chair. He glanced around the room before saying: ‘What are we actually going to do, Inspector? Now everything is up and running.’

Douglas turned away from the whiteboard and remembered he had been promoted. ‘Well, we start at both ends of this. Edinburgh: we need background on Sherratt and the stuff found in his flat. We also need to look at the Paris end and then try to fill in the gaps in between.’

‘The Frenchman and the Algerian?’ Anton said.

Monique pointed at the file on the table. ‘What do you have on them?’

‘Names and photographs, not much else,’ Douglas said. ‘Can you get hold of any biometric data that Paris has on them?’

‘I’ll try, but it depends how fast the news of my new job travels,’ she replied.

‘I assume you know Kerri. See what she has.’

‘I’ll get onto that.’

Douglas turned to Anton. ‘Sherratt’s flat is in the centre of Edinburgh, which could make parking difficult.’

‘It might be easier to take the train,’ Anton said.

‘Would your old colleagues be helpful in providing transport?’’

‘Hmmm, I’m not sure.’

‘We’ll take a pool car, assuming we still have any pool cars left.’

Anton grinned. ‘Most of them are still here. They’re not taking many cars to Dalmarnock.’

‘Why not?’

‘I don’t think the lower orders are going there.’

‘Let’s not worry about that at the moment. Just book out a car and we’ll see if we can find a parking place.’

‘It’s the tourist season,’ Monique said.

‘We’ll see, I’ll have the car in ten minutes or so,’ Anton said.

Douglas watched him go. ‘I’ll open up the safe and you stuff everything into it. I’ve got a phone call to make.’

As they approached the M90 junction on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Anton commented from the back seat: ‘We could park the car at the airport and take the tram into the city centre. The Ingliston Park and Ride is on the airport access road.’

‘Will taking a bus actually save time?’

‘The tram would be quicker and it saves time finding a parking place, which is not always easy at this time of the day.’

Monique glanced round at Anton and then at Douglas. ‘It’s a police car, just park where you want.’

‘We are trying to make this a discreet enquiry,’ Douglas replied, ‘to start with at any rate.’

She sighed and he carried on past the airport sign towards the city centre.

Douglas slowly drove along Chambers Street looking for a vacant parking space. Anton suddenly pointed and exclaimed: ‘He’s pulling out!’

Pressing the pedal to the floor Douglas propelled the car forward and into the vacant space in the centre of the road before any of the cars cruising along the other side of the road could thwart them.

As they climbed out of the car Douglas saw Monique shaking her head and he said: ‘You can drive next time – you need some practise driving on our side of the road.’

She fell into step beside him as they walked past the imposing facade of the museum.
