Chapter Ten
The restaurant was crowded, the seats around the cloth-covered tables and at dark booths nearly overflowing with people. Vivian couldn’t recall a time when one of their family’s restaurants wasn’t busy on a Friday evening. It had been a while since she’d visited any of them, let alone the one where her mother used to be head chef. Vivian grinned and leaned back in her chair as Carla spoke, idly tucking some of her hair back behind her ear. She’d been due for a trim, and it had only been natural to call her cousins up while she was on their side of town.
“So, this woman’s husband comes in, sees her in the suit, and does this double-take like right out of a cartoon.” Carla smiled smugly.
Zoe stopped sipping her mojito long enough to send a curious look Carla’s way. “She hot?”
Carla rolled her eyes and lightly shoved her sister’s shoulder. “I mean, yes, but that’s probably not what tripped him up.”
“Men,” Zoe muttered.
Carla looked ready to shove Zoe again. Instead, she heaved out a dramatic sigh. “It was just a massive change. When she came in to be measured, she was wearing a cute pastel floral print dress—she’s just the soft, sweet type, you know—and then he comes in and finds her in a perfectly cut onyx suit with a ruby vest.”
For a moment, Vivian allowed herself to picture April in such a suit, long blonde curls done in a messy updo. She bit her lip. It had really been too long since she and April had managed to find time for one another. She had understood April’s need to reassure Makayla by staying home on the weekends. Vivian subtly tilted her wrist under the table to check her watch. Still, she was glad April would be meeting her in another hour. The previous day at work she’d almost slipped when she’d realized April had been checking her out. It irritated her when Jack did it, but April had always been more respectful of her personal boundaries. Vivian shifted in her seat, pondering how April could be annoying about work but exceptionally deferential to Vivian’s personal needs.
A hand abruptly thrust in her direction made her instinctively jerk back.
Zoe waved her hand around, grinning as she pulled it back to rest in her lap. “Oh, there you are, Vivian. I know Carla is boring, but it’s still rude to zone out. To me, I mean. If I have to listen to her, so do you.”
Carla scowled and flicked Zoe’s ear. “Jerk.” Her expression smoothed out as she turned to Vivian. “Zoe isn’t totally wrong. What’s up with you?”
“Nothing,” Vivian said placidly.
“Nothing?” Carla leaned slightly over the table as she studied Vivian’s face. “So, say, it has nothing to do with that shirt you asked me to fix?”
Vivian minutely tilted her head, serene expression in place. “I don’t know what you mean.”
Zoe glanced between the two of them before settling on Carla. “Spill.”
“Oh, it was nothing big. I just had
