The following week is a long one, and work isn't doing that much to keep me occupied. The team harasses me at our weekly staff meeting about my "situation".

"Still no date for your parents' anniversary celebration, Syd?" asks Nikki. Jesus, it's almost enough to make me choke on my bagel.

"Well, Nikki, since you asked, I'm actually thinking of inviting a guy I met a few weeks ago."

"Wait, you met a guy?" says Cat.

"Juicy!" I can tell Jonesy wants to say a lot more, but he's holding back. And poor Cass, bless her heart, is about to levitate right out of her chair. I see her eyes widen like she's about to ask me if it's the guy from Pappy's, so I quickly jump in to squash any rumors of that nature.

"It's just someone I know from the SDAA--the San Diego Accountants Association--no big deal. Tried and true, no danger of an actual relationship, but he'll make a good showing for my parents and my married brothers and hopefully get them off my back for another short while."

I almost laugh when the look of disappointment flashes across Cass' face.

"Well, at least you don't have to go solo," she says wistfully.

After that remark, we're finally able to move on to the actual business of the day.

I never finish my bagel, and as a result, by lunchtime I'm starving. My midday errands take me to just the right side of town to get a burger at Pappy's. I'm actually hoping to run into Dane there, more than I am Garrett, because my parents have questions on how to beef up their alarm system at their house. I never even saw Garrett in Pappy's before that fateful Thursday night when I was playing pool with Dane and the boys. I should have known he would be the first person I'd run into.

I spot him immediately at a table near the bar with two of his buddies from that first night. He doesn't see me, though, and for a minute I consider just getting a burger to go, especially since I don't see Dane anywhere. I could play hide and seek, but my recent openness with my family and with the Women Today team has me feeling confident, perhaps overly so.

I hear Garrett speaking as I approach the table, and I immediately wish I didn’t. I should have just minded my own business and walked away, but curiosity got the best of me.

"Look man," he says. "If you hadn't dared me, I would never have done anything like this. But she wants a stooge to meet her whole family, some kind of fake boyfriend thing. You know how women are. They can’t ever show up to a big social even without a man on their arms. She’s one of those independent types, too. You know, the feminist who doesn’t think she needs a man in her life.”

"Shit, man," says the one with dark hair. "Are you going through with it?"

"Hell no. How desperate do you think I am, anyway? I’m a Navy SEAL and can get any woman I want.
