CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Devon Warner lived in a trailer park like many of the other developments in the area, but this one was much smaller than the other they’d visited. There were only six trailers, situated around a circular dirt drive with a picnic bench in the center of it. As Rylie drove up the straight drive, a woman who was hanging up laundry glared at her from the back of her mobile home. A couple of unseen dogs barked at them.

Michael looked up from the file on Devon Warner. “This guy’s got some seriously shady history. He’s been arrested for burglary, assault, drugs, you name it.”

Rylie hated to celebrate a man’s record, but she did an internal fist pump. If they could end this right now, they could be headed back east by nightfall.

But she wasn’t getting her hopes up. She’d done that before, with the last lead that had wound up going nowhere.

“This one,” Michael said, pointing to the second home in the loop. While the last trailer they’d been to had screamed “bachelor pad,” this one had pleasant touches that made it look homey and welcoming. Flowers in window boxes on the façade. A little patio set up with matching furniture. A WELCOME FRIENDS placard near the door. A Chevy Bronco was parked in the driveway, clearly old-model, but free of the layers of dust that seemed to plague most cars. “Doesn’t actually look like the home of a murderer, does it?”

Though she’d been thinking the same thing, she wasn’t happy to hear him announce it. “Well, if every house announced that a criminal lived inside, we’d be out of a job. You can be neat and a psychopath, too. Just ask Hannibal Lector.”

He chuckled as they stepped up to the front door. Before she had a chance to knock, the door swung open, and a man with a drawn, worn face and long, stringy black hair opened it. “No solicitors.”

He pointed to a smaller, barely visible sign under the WELCOME FRIENDS sign.

“We’re not soliciting,” she said, showing her badge. “Devon Warner, we want to ask you a few questions.”

His eyes narrowed. “About what?”

“About a series of murders that have been happening on I-86.”

His mouth dropped open. “Murders?” He shook his head. “Why are you here? You’re not going to try to pin this on me. I’m clean. I’m straight now.”

“You are?”

He crossed his arms. “Definitely. I got out of jail. Got myself a job. Went to rehab. I’ve been off the bottle since I got out. Don’t do no drugs, either. You can ask my probation officer.”

“You’ll give us his name?” Michael asked.

He snarled. “Look. I ain’t gotta tell you nothing.”

“Will you step outside and talk with us, or can we come in?” Rylie asked, noticing a couple of neighbors looking through the windows.

Warner noticed it, too. “Like I said. I ain’t gotta tell you nothing.”

“We’d still like to know where you were during these dates,” Michael said. “So either you discuss it with us here, or we’ll have you arrested and bring you downtown.
