Chapter 11

Monday, June 22nd, 2015 12:30 AM, Bend, Oregon

The bartender slid another shot of Jack across the table. “Rain is still coming down out there. That ought to warm you up.” She flashed me a smile and went on her way toward another customer waiving a wad of cash at her. I hid my face from him and avoided making eye contact even though he looked in my direction.

I sipped on the whiskey slow, letting the liquid burn its way down my throat. My phone began to ring, and like a drunken idiot I answered it. “Hello?”

“Danny?”

I sighed. “Hello, Michelle.”

“Don’t you fucking sigh at me! I just listened to a voice mail from Greg, he said he was worried about you.”

“Really? God dammit that guy is nosy. What did you tell him?” I scanned through my phone, noting that he’d try to call me five times earlier in the day but I’d long ago put him on ignore. Bad move.

She laughed hysterically. “What did I tell him? I am more concerned with the content of his message!”

“And what’s that?” I said, knowing all to well where this conversation was going, and it wasn’t anywhere good.

“Did you quit your fucking job?”

I knocked back the rest of the shot. “Yes. I did. Isn’t that what you always said you wanted me to do?”

“That’s beside the point! If you’re not in Atlanta for work then where the hell are you?”

“I’m nowhere. I wanted to be alone. I know that’s not what you want to hear but that’s the truth.”

She began to cry into the phone. “I don’t know what to do with you anymore. This marriage just isn’t working for me. We’re apart even when we’re together. Your lies, your deceptions, the sneaking around, it’s all too much for me to deal with. You don’t know what it does to me! It kills me!”

I played it cool on the outside, not wanting to make a scene in the bar as I smiled at my potential prey. “I’m sorry, Michelle. I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t know what you want to hear form me.”

“That you’ll stop lying to me, that you’ll stop hurting me, but you never will, will you?”

“Yes, of course I try. I don’t mean to but you take everything so personal when it isn’t meant to be. This isn’t personal. I even went to the therapist you recommended. The drugs he prescribed didn’t do shit, but I went, for you.”

“You’re a liar. You probably went once and never went again, just another quick ploy to get me off you’re back. You know what?”

“What? Is this where you insult me?”

“It’s where I tell you the truth. You’re not capable of an honest relationship. I’ve tried, I’ve really, truly tried, but I can’t deal with this anymore. I want a divorce. I’m leaving you and I’m going to my mothers. Don’t expect to see me when you get back!”

I wanted to tell her the truth of what I was going through, of what I’d done, and why.
