In my break before astronomy, I find myself seated in the courtyard, legs crossed under me, as I copy Zara’s notes from the class that I missed. I hate that I’ve taken so long to get around to it. And I hate that, thanks to Dorian, I haven’t started the project that’s due in a couple of weeks to our professor.

I scrawl notes on my iPad as I flip through Zara’s notes, sighing heavily even though no one is around to hear me. While I had eaten some of my food at breakfast, it wasn’t enough to actually fill me up, and I’m hungrier now than I usually am. Unfortunately, since I’m finishing this, I won’t be able to grab anything to eat until after astronomy. Which is…fine. I’ll just suffer. Which I seem to be doing a lot of lately.

Blinking, I realize I’m no longer alone, and I jerk my face up to meet Cecily’s eyes as she studies the notes on the low wall in front of my crossed legs.

“Umm…” I trail off, unsure of what to say. “I missed a day of class last week? I’m just–”

“He copied the collar from me.” Her gaze moves from the notes to my throat, where the crooked collar sits, looking like just a black necklace. “I’ve known for awhile he wanted to collar someone. But Foster doesn’t like it, and while August might tolerate it, he doesn’t like it either.”

“You…collar people?” I ask, wincing at my words. I don’t need to know, and it’s not my business what the red-haired alpha does.

“My omegas,” she agrees, reaching up as if she’s going to twist the collar back. I pull away, gaze searching her as I do, and she grins. “Oh. So it’s not accidental. I was wondering…one of my omegas did that once.”

“Yeah? Because they don’t like collars?”

“Because she wanted to see what I would do. I gave her what she wanted, and now she wears it straight, just like a good girl should.” The words cause heat to flutter through me, but Cecily isn’t an alpha I would ever want to end up with. Not because she’s a woman. She is actually my type, but…

I don’t know. It’s just not something I’d consider.

“Don’t let him see,” she remarks, crossing one leg over the other. “If he notices more than once, he’s going to know you’re doing it on purpose…and by that look on your face, he’s already caught you with it turned around once, hasn’t he?”

I grimace, nose scrunched up in distaste as I look away. “Whatever,” I say, brushing off her words. “I don’t like him the way your omegas like you, Cecily.”

She just hums a noncommittal reply and gets to her feet. “It’s kind of plain. Does he have another one for when you guys play…” Realization dawns on her face a second later as she trails off. “You don’t play with him, do you?”

“God, no.” I shudder, slipping the notebook and my iPad back into my backpack. “No, I really don’t want anything to do with him, Cecily.
