Chapter 25

The Message

Greg felt like he was going to collapse too, he grabbed a waste basket and vomited in it. Watching the torture of his daughter was incredibly difficult, and now he feared she was truly dead. Roger looked at his watch, the time had clearly not expired, they were only an hour into this horrific ordeal. He suspected Agent Woods’ captors were not prepared for this.

Just before the screen went blank, the camera jolted indicating movement behind the scenes, and what sounded like arguing in something other than English could briefly be heard. Someone in the room interpreted what was said as roughly “Check her, check her!” The FBI had now captured voice prints to work with.

Judging from what everyone in the situation room had witnessed so far, Agent Woods was to be executed in an extremely precise and methodical manner. Now the plan appeared to have gone miserably wrong for her captors. Roger got the feeling they may have killed her too soon. He trembled, visibly shaken by what he just witnessed. This could not be the end; he could not accept the idea that this was it. Every second that passed without knowing what was happening was excruciatingly painful for him, and everyone staring at the blank screens in silence. The seconds turned to minutes.

Without warning, four minutes into the blackout, the feed restarted, someone was tending to Agent Woods. The hooded person smacked her in the face a couple of times, splashing her with water from an unmarked bottle. She coughed prompting someone in the situation room to bellow, “She is alive! Then she seemed to regain her footing, but her head still drooped.

A collective sigh swept through the room accompanied by some applauding and high fives. But this wasn’t over, and everyone in the room was clearly aware of that. Vince checked the timer on the screen against the one on the wall in the situation room, the clock was continuing to count down at the same pace and time.

They watched to see if Agent Woods would continue her attempts to communicate. When the next ten-minute mark approached, all eyes were focused on her lips and the room fell silent. At about the nine-minute mark there was a slightly perceptible movement in the duct tape, more than before, enough to be more noticeable. Someone shouted. “Agent Woods is trying to say something!” The room became silent.

On cue, Agent Woods stared at the green light on the camera directly in front of her that was blinking. She waited for the seconds to tick down to zero, and then she leaned forward commanding the room’s attention. She started to methodically rotate her head in a circular motion as before, then she froze, became wide eyed, and focused her energy. She said something, it was barely decipherable through the duct tape, but she was clearly trying to communicate.

“Did anyone get that?” Vince asked. There was no immediate response, then a hesitant voice replied. It was a woman from the rear and far-right side of the room.
