THE GOLDEN TALONS OF THE KIANG-SHI

For half a century Dracula employed both Shan Wu's sword and his knowledge of Chi You's sorceries and the locations of various strongholds throughout Cathay and along the Silk Route, and the numbers of his undead horde. Thus he was able to destroy many of Chi You's allies and the empire of the Chinese vampire lord shrank rapidly. Dracula attempted to sway the ancient Nycea to aid him in his struggle against the kiang-shi but she steadfastly refused so he decided to destroy her.

At last, in 1672, Dracula received word from Lady Nazara that Cathay was in crisis. Floods and conquest by the Manchurians had left the nation in turmoil. This allowed her and Captain Mazac and their progeny to find the tombs of Chi You's minions from Wu Wei to Hsian, Chengchou, and Peking in the north and put them to the torch and planned a campaign against them at Chungking. Also, there were rumors of Bo Tol's tiger-men attacking the regions around Nanking and Canton in the south. Dracula knew the time was ripe to make the final push into Hunan, the heart of Chi You's crumbling empire of darkness.

Still, Chi You had over three thousand years to prepare his defenses. Dracula knew he would need more to defeat such an enemy.

The man was old, older even than his appearance would decry, yet his eyes had not dimmed nor had his mind. He was no fool, Dracula saw.

Shan Wu-ten had told Dracula of the fabled Society of the White Peacock, a mysterious group or sect who were behind many of the courtly intrigues of Cathay. Indeed, Shan Wu believed they had emissaries in Indochina, India, Persia, Arabia, and even Byzantium.

Emissaries from this Society had arrived to speak to Dracula. They were now seated at opposite ends of a great table in the hall of the Mandarin Vu, who held his throne by the grace of the Society.

"Thy tale is interesting, Vlad Dracula," said Tang Lo, "Yet I can not see the purpose for a war between Chi You of the kiang-shi and thyself. After all, art thou not identical?"

"So it may seem to thee, doctor," said Dracula, "but I see only our differences. One thing we both agree on, however, is this: If one has all the time in the world, why not own the world? Alas, there is but one world.

"More to the point, thou art the enemy of Kiang-Shi for he
