EIGHTEEN
We’d decided mimicking human behavior by traveling in the light of day and resting at night, would bring less attention to us, should we be seen by anyone. This worked out well for everyone except Luthias and me. His years of mingling with humans earned him a greater tolerance for the harsh sun than most vampires, but even he had his limits. As for me, I hadn’t been a vampire long enough to suffer the effects of the sun like an old vampire might, but I still suffered its effects; not to mention I was pregnant and sickly. The sun’s rays made me uncomfortably hot. The jostling of the little wagon made me nauseous. By the time we stopped to make camp, I was practically green and nursing a whopper of a headache.
We were still in no-man’s land, with minimal vegetation and even less animal life to sustain us. Supernatural beings can go far longer without food than humans can. Rob kept his hunger to himself, but he didn’t need to speak of it. His stomach rumbled so loud it was impossible not to know. The look of shame on his face as he gripped his stomach in an attempt to quiet it ripped at me.
“Did anyone make allowances for my driver to eat?” I asked. From the blank looks on my fellow traveler’s faces, I gathered it was something that never crossed their minds. “He needs to eat,” I said firmly. Turning to Rob, I asked in a tone that defied silence, “When was your last meal?”
“Yesterday,” he replied apprehensively.
“That’s terrible!” I bellowed indignantly.
“It’s normal,” he said. “Food is scarce, so we eat on alternate days.”
“Your crops looked plentiful,” I mused.
“They are,” he replied.
“I don’t understand,” I said.
“The vampires take the majority of our crops for themselves,” he said. “We live mostly on the meat we’re able to hunt, when time allows and whatever is left in the fields after we harvest for the king.”
I looked at Luthias with wonderment and asked, “Is this true?”
“I had no idea,” he said with disgust.
“You must eat,” I said as I struggled to hold back my anger. “This just won’t do.”
“The pickings here are pretty slim,” Jason reminded me.
“I’m fine,” the young man assured me. “I’ve gone almost a week without food before. I can make a tea from tree bark. It will fill my belly enough to quiet it down.”
“Do you like bark tea?” I asked with disdain.
“Not really,” he said sheepishly.
“Then, you won’t be drinking it,” I said firmly. “You will eat!”
Luthias and Jason exchanged looks that clearly indicated they found my demands for the human’s comfort a nuisance before they tossed a coin to see who would go hunting and who would stay and oversee setting up camp.
