Chapter 9

They stopped, Joel and Gaelic putting out their arms to stop Em who was lost in thought. She looked around and saw that they had gone farther than she realized. They were standing at the entrance to Kettletown State Park. It was a distance of close to thirty miles and took almost an hour to drive. With Rory’s blood in her body, she was not even winded, no less tired. Ding bounced up behind them. “That was wild. Do you realize that you were running at speeds between thirty and fifty miles an hour?”

“No, we didn’t know that, Ding,” replied Rory. “Please go back to the truck, and stay there unless we ask you to get out.”

She rolled her eyes, bobbing her head from side to side as was her habit. “Okay. Fine.” Ding turned and stormed back to the truck.

Em gave him a smile. “It was an interesting tidbit.”

“Okay, so it was. We also don’t need the distraction right now. We are at the mouth of the den of the lion.”

Joel nodded. “Very true. I think that you and Wesley should walk behind the trucks, and we will remain in front. It will give them more protection, and we will be less of a target if we aren’t together.”

Rory nodded and grabbed Em by the front of her shirt, giving her a quick kiss that relayed far too much passion. With a flick of his wrist, Rory turned and walked away. Em shook herself back to reality. Gaelic appeared amused, but Joel looked angry again. Em gave him a smile. “I love you.”

“I know you do. He is just so damn arrogant.”

“He is just as worried about me as you are. He left me to be with the two of you. Did you really expect him to walk away without touching me in some way? He needed to confirm what he was feeling with a kiss.”

Joel nodded. “Okay. I’m a bit on edge. Maybe you’re right. I already know that he cares about you.”

“Yes, he does. How far do you think they are?”

“I’m not sure. They are close. Aren’t there cabins here?”

“Yeah.”

“Then we need to walk, and we need to be really careful.” Joel took her hand and Gaelic took the other. They began to walk slowly forward, watching the sides of the road carefully as they moved. “We need to take Cobalt out first if possible. He is the leader of the pack.”

“Okay,” replied Em quietly. Fear was creeping slowly into her mind, and she was fighting to control the emotion. What if there were more than three vampires here? What if they had gathered and the five of them were badly outnumbered? Maybe it had been a bad idea to come so brazenly into their habitat. Em had been to the park camping on a few occasions, but she didn’t know it all that well.

Gaelic squeezed her hand. “You okay?”

Em nodded, but wasn’t as inwardly convinced. They were nearing the cabins, and she was surprised that the three hadn’t shown themselves yet.
