CHAPTER NINE

When Joseph woke up the next morning, he noticed almost immediately that he was alone in the room. Joseph had offered to leave the party the night before partly because he thought that Tom would follow, but Tom insisted he was fine and gave Joseph his blessing to leave. It did seem that the vampires in attendance at the party had already found their marks, and by the time Joseph left, the victims-to-be were mostly already well on their way to alcohol-induced unconsciousness. Tom apparently felt he had already dodged the bullet, and, in his typical amiable way, was perfectly content to be smothered by Astor's attention.

Which raised the question: where was Astor? Though he would normally be thrilled to have Astor anywhere but in the same room with him, Joseph found his absence to be a different kind of annoying. Astor had made it abundantly clear which team he played for, so Joseph clearly had no competition there, and yet he still found himself feeling jealous that Astor had been out all night hanging all over Tom. Joseph had imagined that an evening surrounded by attractive young drunk people would give him a chance to figure out exactly where Tom directed his romantic attentions, but Astor had continued his streak of ruining everything.

Joseph reminded himself that there was a whole semester's worth of parties to come and resolved to stop obsessing over a boy like some lovelorn teenager. Tom was probably never going to be more than a friend, as was the case with basically every cute guy on the planet Joseph had encountered, so he would be better off just enjoying it for what it was.

As Joseph got up to grab his shower kit, there was a knock on the door. Astor, idiot that he was, probably lost his key, thought Joseph. When he opened the door, however, there was a policeman instead.

"Hello. Is this the residence of Astor Billigan?"

"Uh, yeah," said Joseph. "I mean, he just moved in the other day. But yeah."

"And you were his roommate?"

"I am his roommate, yeah. Is he in trouble?"

"I'm Officer Krupke," said the officer, extending his hand to shake Joseph's.

The name sounded familiar to Joseph, but he couldn't quite place it.

"Uh... Joseph. Joseph Evans, sir."

"Joseph, I have a warrant to search this room. Mind if I come in?"

The question seemed like an odd formality given the warrant, but Joseph offered an invitation regardless.

"Is he in trouble?" asked Joseph.

"Son, his body was found early this morning by the sanitation crew."

"His... body?"

"Which side of the room is his?" Krupke asked.

"Uh, the one by the window."

The officer went to the far side of the room and began to rifle through Astor's things.

"When was the last time you saw Astor, Joseph?"

"Last night. We were... we were at a party together."

"What party?"

"There was a freshman mixer thing. At the Redmund Center."

"And did you leave together?"

"What? No. I left early, and he was still there. You mentioned his body. Are you saying he's... you know? Dead?"

"Do you know any reason someone would want to kill him?" Krupke asked, ignoring Joseph's question.
