THE ARMY SPREAD OUT along the bank, their reserve lining the bridge. Even with their diminished numbers, Hest marveled at the might of their company, and couldn’t help but compare himself to these men. No matter how he reasoned it, he always returned to the same thought: he wasn’t a warrior or a fighter. What was he supposed to do? Stay alive, but how? He had a sword, but despite Sydur’s confidence in him, he wasn’t sure he could use it.

“The cannonsea wants to see you.” A young man looked up at Hest, but even so it felt like he was staring down his nose at him.

“Buhas, boiwith.” Hest’s attempt at Atsegenian seemed to melt the runner’s reserve. “Where is he?”

“I’ll take you to him. Is it true you grew up where Graen is hidden?”

Hest grinned. “I have a friend at home who warned me about coming with the cannonsea. He thought I’d burn up because of Graen.”

“Really?”

“The rumors in Skymna are that Graen’s a ball of fire in the sky that burns everything in its path.” Hest couldn’t help a small smile, the conversation reminded him of Torrin.

As they walked, the lad asked, “Is it true that the only light comes from Handi?”

“Yes, we measure time by Handi and Tsiki. They provide all the guidance we need.”

“I don’t think I could see at all.” The other shook his head.

Hest thought about it. Maybe that was why Sydur hadn’t been able to find the river crossing the first moonstep they’d left Stad. “I guess our eyes adjust, just like walking into a dim room.”

“Never thought of that.”

“Hest,” Sydur motioned for him to hurry, “we’re heading out.”

“Where are we going?” Hest swallowed, fearing the inevitable answer.

“Athair wishes us to lead a group to intercept the warriors you saw. It appears that the two you saw were only the guards. There are closer to two hundred warriors about twenty-four furlongs away. The king’ll go with the rest of the army to cut them off from the larger group, while we keep the smaller contingent from reaching Talmore Bridge.”

Two hundred soldiers was a small number? It didn’t seem like it. He rubbed his hands along his trousers and bumped his sword. It felt like something coiled at his side ready to bite him.

“Ready, scubhear?” Sydur smiled at him, imparting encouragement and strength with the expression.

Hest chose his words carefully. “Yes, I may not know what I’m getting myself into, but I’ll follow you, Cannonsea.”

“Good, then let us gather the rest of our force.”

Before Hest was truly ready, they had three companies—one from each group. The Muintirians
