Chapter 17

Ollie laughs nervously, “Number is just someone from a movie she fancied.”

I try to think of a better explanation. No one will buy that one, when did I ever see a movie before coming to Finn’s place?

Strangely, they seem convinced by his explanation and turn away from me. “We should get going,” Ollie says. “We don’t want to be late for church, especially as we have the preacher here.”

Drimmy’s ill-advised statement has actually ended up helping me. Ollie is keen to get everyone away before they can ask another question about Number so I won’t have to face a protracted argument about Dominko. I resist giving him a grateful smile, however. Dominko may be helping us, but if he finds out about Number, then the soldier could be in real trouble.

With one last look of warning for Dominko from the two men, they head for the door. I look uncertainly around the room. Marg sees the others out and tells them she’ll be up shortly, then turns back to me. She stares at Dominko’s back for a moment as he walks around the room examining the furniture.

“Um, I’ve left some food out for you. Come, I’ll show you where everything is, and then you can make yourself at home.”

I follow her to the kitchen where a plate of cookies has been put out. She shows me where the glasses are and tells me to help myself to whatever I like from the fridge. She keeps darting startled glances at Dominko who has followed me into the kitchen, but she only talks to me. She shows me around the rest of the house as well, the bathroom, a backroom for me to rest in if I feel unwell and a sun-drenched sitting room.

“I can stay if you’d like? You know, in case you become unwell?” She darts another look at Dominko.

I take her offered hand and give it a pat. “I’ll be fine,” I assure her. “Please go and enjoy the service. Finn sounded very excited about it. I’ll be okay, thank you so much for letting me stay here.”

“Okay, if you’re sure?” I nod and so with one last glance at Dominko, she grabs her bag and leaves.

Once she’s out the door, I start laughing. “Do you have that effect on everyone?”

“What effect?” Dominko asks, turning to me in surprise. I laugh louder. “Never mind.”

I lead him back out to the sunroom, grabbing a glass of milk and a cookie on the way even though I have just finished breakfast. They have chocolate bits in them and I can’t resist.

I plonk myself on a chair and turn to Dominko. He’s gazing out the window.

“Well?” I ask, eager to hear what he’s found out.

“It’s pretty, isn’t it?”

“Dominko!”

“Oh yes, okay!” He turns to me, and his eyes gleam with excitement.

“I’ve been going through the old case notes on the healing clones. It’s remarkable science! Falisco, who headed up the engineering, was nothing short of a genius! The things he discovered and implemented were amazing!” He stares at me, waiting for a response.
