Awareness slowly returned and she woke up to a now quiet room. Cyne held her cradled within his embrace, placing small kisses in her hair. “You okay, love? Back with us?”
“Y-yes.” She tried to speak around her dry throat. “W-what happened?”
“A slight side effect we didn’t count on.” Another kiss pressed to her head, this time longer.
“What do you mean? Is Jaoel okay?” Evie shrank deeper into his embrace, never wanting to leave.
“After you distracted him for us, Dashiel was able to hit him with a powerful tranquilizer. He’s asleep now. I believe they made the decision to try the procedure with Jaoel completely under. Mestari Ardon said it would be safer.”
The need to see the Surmata safe propelled Evie out from underneath Cyne’s arm. She turned toward him, but he blocked her view of the room. “Move, Cyne. I need to see him.”
Cyne regarded her. Whatever he found in her gaze had him stepping to the side without a word.
Little of the room remained untouched around them. Medical supplies littered the floor. Nothing stood in its original place; all carts and machinery were pulled apart like kindling for a fire. The table that previously held Jaoel had splintered in two; the top half ended up by the door and the bottom half near where she stood. Cabinet doors were torn from their place, broken in pieces. Evie lifted her eyes from the rubble and trained her attention on the others in the room. Inian and Mestari Ardon were unscathed. Dash looked like he had gone against a prizefighter and barely came out the other side. His shirt was a shredded mess across his chest, the tattered pieces barely held together by the remaining fabric. Blood coated one side of his face and a long streak of red ran down his exposed chest.
Evie’s eyes found the man on the makeshift bed. Jaoel also had blood on his face but that was the only indication of violence on him.
“Oh my gosh! Dash, are you alright? Did Jaoel do that to you?” Evie rushed over to him but didn’t touch him, afraid she would cause him pain.
Dashiel waved off her concern. “I’m fine, dove. Someone had to restrain Jaoel. As his Soma, it’s my responsibility. I was able to hold him long enough for Mestari Ardon to inject the tranquilizer. My injuries, as well as Jaoel’s, have already healed, without medical intervention.”
“I thought it wasn’t safe for Jaoel to be unconscious during the extraction? Why the change of plans?” Evie lifted her palm, touching him lightly on the arm.
“Jaoel’s instincts are too aroused. It’s too dangerous to move forward with him conscious. Mestari Ardon thinks he can modify the treatment to account for this new development.”
“Okay. So what’s next?” Evie shifted, moving closer to Dash. She needed the comfort of his body.
“We are going to begin again.” The healer, who’d been quiet up until now spoke. “Are you ready to proceed, Inian?”
“Yes.” The elder looked unfazed by everything happening. His calm expression never changed.
