Chapter 14

“ARE you sure you’re well enough to go back to work today?” Mrs. Twitchell asked as she drove toward Bywater Farm. She’d categorically refused to let him ride his scooter when it was still cold outside and he was barely over the flu.

“I need to go back to work,” Luke said. “I appreciate everything you’ve done, taking care of me the past week, but I’m going stir-crazy cooped up inside. I haven’t spent an entire day inside since I graduated from high school, and even then, I was working at one stable or another after school to help Mom out. I’m not cut out for sitting around, doing nothing.”

“You weren’t doing nothing,” Mrs. Twitchell said. “You were getting well. That’s something else entirely.”

Luke flushed beneath the gentle reprimand, but he disagreed. Whatever Mrs. Twitchell said, it had felt like sitting around doing nothing. “Yes, ma’am.”

“You don’t fool me with that meek act,” Mrs. Twitchell said, but she was smiling, so Luke hoped she wasn’t too offended. “You’re a troublemaker at heart. You’ve just learned to hide it. Your Mr. Hunter is in for a surprise with you.”

If only Clay were his Mr. Hunter, but that was wishful thinking. He’d left a message for Clay, asking about King. He’d gotten a terse text assuring him King was fine in reply and then nothing more. Clearly, Clay wasn’t interested in him.

“If you say so,” Luke replied. They reached the main entrance of Bywater Farm, so Luke concentrated on giving Mrs. Twitchell directions through the different lanes to the stud barn.

“I’ve driven by here more times than I can count, but I don’t think I’ve ever been inside,” Mrs. Twitchell said as they pulled up to the barn. “It’s a beautiful place.”

“I could ask Joe if he’d mind if I showed you around,” Luke offered.

“Oh, I couldn’t keep you from your work,” Mrs. Twitchell said. “I’ll just admire it from the car. You call me when you’re ready to come home, even if it’s just an hour or two from now. I still think it’s too soon for you to be back at work.”

“I’ll be fine,” Luke assured her, “but I will call you when I’m ready to come home. Have a good day.” He climbed out of the car and waved good-bye as she drove back out the way they’d come in. He took a deep breath to steady himself and walked inside. King already had his head out of the stall, waiting for him. “Hey, big guy. I’ve missed you.”

King head-butted Luke’s chest gently. Luke laughed around the lump in his throat and stroked King’s forelock. “Careful,” he warned King. “I’m not up for the full stallion treatment yet, okay? I’m here on sufferance. If you get me started coughing, they’ll send me home again.”

“Good morning, Luke,” Joe said as he came into the breezeway. “You’re looking better than the last time I saw you.”

“I should hope so, since the last time you saw me, I was delirious with a fever,” Luke replied.
