CHAPTER 7
Ilani and Tatiana sat in the reception area, finishing their meals.
âThis soup is pretty awful. Why does it have beans?â Tatiana said.
âItâs chili, not soup thatâs why,â Ilani said. âAnd the cornbread is pretty good.â
âYes.â Tatiana nibbled on a yellow chunk. âSweet is good.â
It was sweet cornbread, which paired well with chili, but most southerners from the States wouldâve revolted.
They were a world away.
Both of the girls smiled at me as I walked over to the television on the wall. The first oddity was the lack of a power cord.
I examined the TV, probing for magic and was immediately rewarded with the sight of strands of magic trailing off the sides and back. Iâd never before seen anything quite like thisâthe machine looked normal, but an intricate braid of at least four strands of magic interfaced with it. On the other side, they connected to nothing, but held stable, floating, waiting. For someone to grasp them? Interface with their power? Energize them?
The base structure reminded me of the way they traveled. It looked as if you were supposed to grasp the strands of power.
I squinted, then focused on Ilani. "You know how you connect with the land? When you want to move fast?"
"Yes."
"I think you could connect with the TV the same way. Why don't you try to feel the magic trailing off it?"
Her brow furrowed with concentration.
The standing wave of magic around her bulged chaotically, spiking out into the air all around her. It was like a blind personâs arms being extended, to check for barriers. Unlike that image, Ilaniâs flailed against the air.
It brushed Tatiana and she jumped, moving halfway across the room. Her hair stood half on end, as if with a static charge.
My hand fell from where Iâd reached out to Ilani. I didnât want a nasty shock.
âTry moving closer to it,â I suggested.
She took several steps forward, her expression frustrated but determined, magic stabbing and spiking around her like a sea urchinâs spines. I held my breath as her magic brushed against one of the connections.
It stirred and plumped, siphoning magic away from her. The television screen flickered and then lit up, blurry figures appearing on the screen that wavered in and out of focus.
Ilani's face firmed into a triumphant glare, and she stared at the screen. Her magic solidified, spiking even more, reaching for the other connections, those strands latching on too.
Her brow furrowed, and the picture on the screen wavered, and then the familiar music from the introduction of Princess Mononoke came from the speakers.
An anime about the conflict of nature and industry? I dismissed the question of how sheâd seen it.
Tatiana came closer, staring at the screen. They both settled in comfy chairs, enthralled.
Iâd come back later to experiment on my own. Even with Ilaniâs impressive magical reserves, sheâd probably be tired by the end of the movie. In the meantime, Iâd enjoy a short nap to replenish my own energy, and then see if the TV had uses other than watching movies.
