SEVEN

Joanna watched Blade set up a mass of cables and wires around his laptop on the kitchen table, connecting them to small devices, blinking with lights. She felt a sense of unease hanging in the air. When she had walked in on Tyler and Blade’s earlier conversation, she’d been sure they had been discussing her. Something about the expression on their faces reminded her of children being caught stealing candy: guilty.

“Are you sure that emailing Luke is the best way of contacting him?” Joanna asked, walking to the coffeepot and pouring herself a large mug. “There must be a quicker way.”

“Sometimes speed isn’t everything,” Blade replied, tapping away on the keyboard. “If we telephone him from a landline, the police will instantly try to trace the number. If we use a cell phone, the provider may be able to give them our geographical location. But if the police try to trace our email, it will lead them all over the world, thanks to a very careful setup that reroutes our proxy server wherever we want it to go. I just have to set up an untraceable email address and we’re good to go.”

Joanna surveyed the mass of wiring. Her exasperation was growing, and she swallowed it. Luke might not respond to an email for hours. They could be stuck there, twiddling their thumbs until the evening. Tomorrow was Christmas Eve. She had hoped they would able to return to Godspeed for the holidays, but she had clearly been kidding herself.

Tyler, standing close by, guessed how she was feeling and put his hand on the small of her back, leading her into the living room.

“I know you want to move quickly on this, but we need to be really cautious about how we proceed.”

Joanna sighed. “But there must be a quicker method than email.”

“There isn’t,” Tyler said. “Let’s trust Blade on this. He’s a communications expert. He’ll cover our tracks so well that no one will have a clue where we are.”

Joanna raised her eyes to the ceiling. Her shoulders were tense and her neck was stiff. The soreness in her armpit had dulled to a mild throb, and a swelling had popped up, soft and squishy with the yellowing marks of tissue damage. It must be a bruise. She kept telling herself this over and over. It must be a bruise.

“How’s the pain you were telling me about yesterday?” Tyler asked, putting a tentative hand on her shoulder.

His blue eyes were slightly moist and his baby face didn’t look quite so young today. He had grown stubble, faintly flecked with gray, hiding his dimples, and the effect was to make him appear more rugged. Joanna took a deep breath, suppressing a fluttering heart. Her attraction to the sheriff had never been a problem. She had always covered it up with a professional and go-getting attitude. In fact, her job provided a mask for a whole lot of emotions.

“It’s okay,” she lied. “I was just being paranoid.” She looked away.
