Chapter Nine
Zach
The church was over two hundred years old and was what my mom called a classic example of New England tradition and beauty. Large, plain structure covered in white clapboards. Big bell tower rising up a couple stories topped off by a sturdy belfry. Simple and pretty. The perfect place for listening and thinking. My favorite part of the place was the newer addition that had been tacked to the back of the building in the sixties. It was where the kitchen and the Sunday school classes were. Smelled like cooking fuel, spaghetti sauce and graham crackers. Sounded like clanging pots and pans and kid giggles.
As I stood in the parking lot, surveying the six-foot pile of woodchips that had been dumped on the corner of the playground, I wondered if, after I moved away from Ellery and got another degree and found a job and got on with my life, I’d ever find a church that would make me feel so at home.
There were probably scads of similar non-denominational churches in Boston. But still. This church right here was where I’d learned all kinds of fundamentals. How to get my head unstuck from a play structure. How to make a macramé holiday decoration that was half menorah, half cross, half angel—too many halves there, I know. But I’d tried.
It was also the place where I’d learned about sex, drugs and rock and roll. The place where I’d had my first unrequited crush. And it was the place where I’d come out. Likely someday it would be the place where I got married.
But, yeah. The distant future was not something I wanted to think about today. The next couple months would be more than I could handle.
I looked around the parking lot. I might be the only one to show up at the spread-the-chips party this morning. Shit.
I had a bunch of other stuff I’d rather be doing, but tomorrow was Sunday and the kids at Sunday school would probably love to have woodchips instead of mud to play on. I picked up one of the shovels I’d stashed in the back seat of my car. There were shovels in the tool shed here at the church, but the ones from home were better.
Before I started in on the pile, I checked my phone for the time and messages. Kirby was due for a therapy appointment at nine—this one at the PT center and not at home. Chuck, the PT who’d been paying house calls, had suggested we make some adjustments with Kirb’s treatment because Kirby was having “motivation problems”. Not untypical, Chuck had said. But a bit unusual for someone as young and active as Kirby.
I was ready to make some adjustments too. I’d been ignoring Kirby’s problems for the last several days because I’d been frustrated. Mostly with myself. I knew about training, exercise, discipline, keeping to a schedule. Kirb didn’t. But instead of being my usual patient self I’d been heavy-handed. As Liese had put it: “a bossy-as-hell asshole”.
