Chapter 9 – I Dropped To My Knees

We hadn't been there more than five minutes before the door buzzed open and Izzy walked in, carrying an adorable little long-haired Chihuahua, baby-talking her. “You did such a good job today, Bunny-wunny.” Then repeating in Spanish before she stopped short, seeing me and Cal.

She looked to have stopped a gleep by milliseconds, and with a smooth recovery, said, “Hello Finnegan, Sir Calvin. Rafiel said you'd meet me here, I expected you upstairs.”

I shrugged. “Just thought we'd go up with ya. Besides, I was just conversing with Jamal.”

She snorted as she crouched so the dogs could sniff each other's noses, and Cal gave Bunny a big wet slurp, causing the little pup to bark once, her tail swishing wildly. “You mean gossip. Jamal is a chatterbox, a bonito one at that.”

While she thumped Calvin's side like a fuzzy drum with her free hand, I agreed, “Right? I'm glad I'm not the only one who calls him pretty.”

She stood and I noted she still dressed so playfully edgy yet still professionally, and her tastes had matured from the more scene girl flavor of dress and makeup she leaned toward when she first started walking dogs. She still dyed her hair stark white, not giving up on her individuality.

She sat Bunny down as the four of us bypassed the freight elevator to head up the stairs. When possible, I preferred to use the stairs, I had sort of a hard limit set for myself of ten stories since that is when I broke down and used the elevators.

She prodded me for information about what was going on as we climbed. I told her what we knew so far, and a little of my theory. She was nodding as I inquired, “Has there been anyone new hanging around the seasoned walkers from RCW like you in the past few months? We think he or she is cloning key cards, all they have to do is get close to where you carry them. Luce demonstrated, and the results scared the ever-loving fuzzy heck out of me.”

The girl smirked and said, “That chica is scary smart. Like are we talkin' everyone in general? The collective is huge. If there's one thing Rafiel can do, it's recruit. The RCW has doubled in size since I joined.”

I knew he was doing well, Polly says so, and it was a little disconcerting how he has been targeting more affluent clients, his sights set on the elite territory where I thrived. This rash of lost dogs though was effectively putting the brakes on any inroads he has made, through no fault of his own... this time.

“No, more like anyone hanging out around the top walkers?”

She contemplated it as we reached the fifth-floor landing and headed up the next flight. “Nobody that is actin' overt about it or anything. I mean, Rafiel, he doesn't put up with any wasted time. If you have time to stand around or bother other walkers, then you have time to walk another dog.
