Chapter 7 – Generator

Detective Sean Flannery, my sometimes partner, called out from his desk as he stood, “Hey McLeary. That fuckin' hurricane Natalie is gonna hit landfall soon. I'm headin' out, you should too. Go be with your family.”

I waved him off with a flourish of my hand. I was just wrapping up some stuff anyway, there wasn't very much I could do until I could do some interviews. I already had more than a good hunch who was involved here, just not any specific names. It would take just a little pressure on the right people and they'd cave and give us those names.

It was obviously some of the kids from Columbia doing the classic Mascot abduction that is almost a rite of passage for high school and college rivalries. They had no way of knowing that the game would be called before halftime so the demoralizing of the opposing team for the second half was foiled. I'm positive the dog would have been returned after the game if things hadn't gone south during the abduction. That was just how these things went. Kids will be kids.

God, listen to me, calling college students kids when I'm only... good lord, I'm thirty now? Really? That can't be right. Whatever.

This whole situation is just a tragedy. What happened to this Levar Stevens guy that Fin knew, was unintentional, and the dognappers wouldn't be in as much trouble if they hadn't run off when the man fell. This turned it into a couple of felonies at the very least now.

I looked at Sean. He was a good egg. Always came in to help whenever I called for a little extra investigative manpower. Sure, he whined like a little bitch about it but never said no.

I told him, “Wrapping things up now. Thanks for coming in, I really appreciate it.”

“Yeah, yeah, you'll appreciate it when I stick you with my shift on the on-call list next month.”

“Bastard.”

“Sue me.”

I flipped him off and he grinned and said seriously, “Get home to your wife and kids. We can wrap this whole thing up tomorrow.”

Nodding I watched him go, leaving me alone in the empty space. I'm sure only a skeleton crew was down in holding and at the front desk since all units were mobilized for the storm.

I tapped a pencil on the printout in front of me on a picture then sighed. It was always a tragedy when something like this spiraled out of control and someone got hurt. This was going to affect the rest of the two people's lives depending on the charges the DA throws at them.

My cell dinged. I hadn't been able to get a call out on it in a half-hour. I had been relegated to using the landlines, but they were all tied up now too.

I snorted and shook my head in resignation at the text my trouble magnet of a wife had sent me. “Jane, the masks are drama masks, not clowns. And one of the perpetrators is female.
