“MATT, I’M SURPRISED you didn’t bring Bruno.” Leila says as she hands me another beer.

“I thought about it, but changed my mind. He’s fine at home. What we should have brought is Ellie’s guitar.” I look at her and grin.

“You play the guitar? That’s awesome! I always wanted to learn how to play,” Beau chimes in.

“Yeah, I can play, but I don’t play for people. That’s way out of my comfort zone.” She pins me with a look that says, “Thanks a lot.”

“She should. She’s really good,” I say encouragingly.

Her eyes narrow. “How would you know?”

“Because I’ve heard you almost every day since you’ve been here.”

“Oh.” Her cheeks redden and it’s damn adorable.

“I bet Quinn would like it,” Beau says, and my eyes drift to him and Leila.

I’m not sure what she and Ellie talked about while we were gone, but since Beau and I got back, Leila has watched her a little more intensely. Not in a negative way, but more, I don’t know, almost protectively. She seems to be very attuned to Ellie’s comments and reactions.

“I’ll think about it,” she says with a small shrug.

Noticing she’s out of wine, I reach over, take her glass, and stand. “I’ll go get you some more.”

“Thanks.” She smiles up at me and I feel it reach into every hidden part of me.

“I’ll show you where it is,” Leila says, climbing to her feet, too. I follow her inside, wishing it was Ellie instead.

Ellie.

I never thought I would be with anyone. I always thought that I would be alone. I wanted it this way, but now I’m not so sure. Being here tonight and having her with me is confusing me. It’s all frighteningly normal, and I am afraid to bask in how damn awesome it feels. It’s causing me to think about the prospect of wanting more, a more that I’ve never dared to consider before. Both Drew and Beau found their more in two amazing girls who love them for who they are, faults and all. Would Ellie do the same for me?

Sitting down at the kitchen island, my eyes are drawn to a light that is flickering against my skin. Varying colors of yellow and orange, just like the sun. There’s a big jar candle sitting next to the sink. I wonder how I never noticed it before.

“You’re burning a candle?” I look at Leila. Sweat breaks out across my forehead, and I’m hoping she doesn’t notice.

“Yeah.” She tilts her head as she looks at me curiously. “I like the way they smell. Why?”

“But . . .”

Her look softens and she smiles. “It’s okay, Matt. We aren’t afraid of fire anymore; we haven’t been for a while.”

I tense at her words. But I am! I don’t like it and don’t want to see it, certainly not in the house. Without thinking, I lean over and blow it out. Smoke from the wick floats through the air and hits my nose. I’m repulsed by a smell that I haven’t had to smell in years, and I jump out of the chair.
