Chapter Thirteen
Revulsion pooled in Shayâs stomach. Once upon a time, sheâd fancied herself in love with the man in front of her. Because heâd made her nervous, and all her friends had always giggled about boys who gave them butterflies. Because heâd paid attention to her and bought her presents when all her friends had complained their boyfriends wouldnât even take them to McDonaldâs and pay.
She knew sheâd been young and sheltered and Frankie had targeted her because she was pretty and he fancied her dumb and weak enough to be the kind of woman whoâd fit well on his arm. There were excuses she could make herself feel better with, sure.
But faced with the reality of the situation, she could only feel sick to her stomach over how stupid sheâd been.
Still, that didnât change her current situation.
And Frankie was right. Sheâd changed. Gotten smarter and stronger, and she could feel ill over that young woman making bad choices, but this woman wasnât going to repeat those mistakes.
This woman had learned how to fight, thanks to the man standing next to her, and thatâs what she was going to do.
She had to be careful about what she said and how she said it, but she couldnât stand Frankieâs attention on Granger. So, she broke her silence.
âSo, Frank,â she said, knowing heâd hated that because it had been his grandfatherâs name, and he blamed his grandfather for all the work heâd had to do to rebuild the Vianni name.
Even though it had been his father whoâd made the mistakes that had gotten Frank thrown in jail, where heâd died.
âI know I was a great catch and all, but this seems like an awful lot of work to get back a wife who clearly didnât want you.â
Like sheâd hoped, his attention turned back to her. He smiled, that cruel smile that had her stomach cramping, and a muscle memory wanting her to flinch and brace herself for a blow.
She managed to fight back the flinch, but it was a near thing.
âOh, it wasnât so clear, was it, Veronica? You wanted me well enough.â
Another roll of nausea went through her, but she held his dark gaze. âI think you have me confused with one of your prostitutes.â
He let out a little tinkle of a laugh as though she had a delightful sense of humor. âYou always could make me laugh, Veronica. It was a shame you were so stupid. We could have done great things together.â
The sad thing was, when sheâd been eighteen, sheâd believed him. That she was stupid. That everything that went wrong was her fault. Luckily, she wasnât eighteen anymore.
âSo,â he said conversationally, walking away from her and Granger and toward the door. She didnât let her gaze follow him. She went back to looking forward at the wall.
âWhen do you think your friends will be arriving?â
Terror gripped her in a new way. Your friends. He meant North Star. And if he was bringing it up...
That meant heâd set a trap for North Star.
