Addison

When they walked into the presidential suite, Addison gasped. It was her first time in Philadelphia, and Savant had definitely chosen a hotel that gave them a warm welcome.

“I couldn’t decide between this one and the junior suite because it had a pool table.” He shrugged, making his way next to her. “I figured if I wanted to play pool while I was here, we could just go to a pool hall , so I chose this one.” Savant looked down at her as her eyes stretched across every inch of the spacious living room with panoramic views. “What you think?”

“It’s huge. And beautiful. And that piano…” Making her way through the entertainment area, she sat behind the grand piano. Her fingers slid across the keys before she pulled them away quickly, as if they’d burned her. She chuckled softly as her head hung. Even though so much time had passed since she’d left Andy, the effects of being with him snuck up on her at the most unexpected times.

“You play?”

Gritting her teeth, Addison nodded softly. “I uh… I used to.”

“Why’d you stop?”

Up until now, Addison hadn’t shared any details about her marriage with Savant. Eventually, that would have to change, but she was hoping she didn’t slip up before then. As she saw Savant headed in her direction, her fingers shook as they hovered over the keys again. Closing her eyes, she lowered them and began to play the last piece she’d ever played years ago -- For Elise, Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor by Beethoven.

When she finished, her body shook as her breathing grew ragged. She hadn’t realized Savant was sitting next to her until he put his hand on her thigh and she jumped. Clutching her heart, she tried to slow her breathing.

“Are you okay?”

Nodding, Addison swallowed. “I’m fine.”

“You don’t look fine.” She looked over at him and smiled softly. “That was beautiful, Addy. Absolutely beautiful.”

“I was married before,” she blurted before she lost her courage. Heat pricked her cheeks, and she found herself unable to meet his eyes as the desire to run away consumed her.

Still, Addison continued on. “We divorced a little over eight years ago. I don’t like to talk about that because it’s…” Her head shook as she cleared her throat. “My ex-husband was very possessive. And abusive toward the end. He was a bully. But he wasn’t that way when we first got married.”

Addison’s lip curled as she squeezed her burning throat briefly. “He was a master manipulator. Andy basically love bombed me. For the year we dated, he was perfect. Saying and doing all the right things, showering me with attention, affection, and gifts. About a year into our marriage, that changed. I was still young and dumb and in love, so I stayed. It took a really long time for me to leave because he was good at what he did. Plus, we’d had… I was committed. Had he not started hitting me, we would probably still be married.” Her shoulders caved as she wiped her tears.
