The Unforgettable Sheikh: Chapter Two

The brief cool spell from Thursday’s rain ended Friday afternoon. Saturday dawned hot and muggy. By midmorning Chloe wished for the thousandth time that she had a place in the mountains. It'd be cooler there. The house was air-conditioned, but she had yard work to do and a dirty car to wash.

Mackenzie had spent the night at her friend Stephanie’s and wouldn’t be home until later.

Chloe needed to keep busy. She'd finish her chores, then be free to spend the afternoon with her daughter. She had to stop thinking about yesterday’s press conference and the unexpected assignment with Karif.

Had he really recognized her? Or had it been too long since he’d seen her?

Had she been only one in a long line of women? From what Mike had muttered, the sheikh was used to escorting beautiful and prominent women in several countries.

While not exactly a flamboyant playboy, he obviously would have no time for a quiet photojournalist he’d once known briefly a decade before.

Chloe finished mowing the lawn and put the mower away in her detached garage. She glanced at the street when the sleek black limousine purred to a stop in front of her house. She stood in the driveway, her heart sinking. Transfixed, she watched as the car stopped and a man climbed out of the front and reached back to open the rear door.

Transfixed, she stared.

Sheikh Karif bin Shakirah climbed out and stood on the sidewalk, surveying her house through dark glasses. She couldn’t determine from his expression what he thought, but it really didn't mattered. For one brief moment she toyed with the idea of dashing back into the garage and hiding.

But it was too late. He’d seen her.

He strode confidently toward her.

Chloe couldn’t move. She stood where she was and idly wondered where his robes were. He was dressed in a business suit as normal as any American businessman. He was as tall as she remembered. He’d already been a man when she’d known him, but now she was seeing him with different eyes.

Her heartbeat increased. She wished she'd had a chance to shower. She had bits of grass clinging to her legs and she felt hot and sweaty.

Totally not ready to face him. Whatever would she say?

Karif’s scanned Chloe as he slowly walked across her lawn, She looked almost as young as when he’d last seen her, yet she had to be twenty-nine by now. She'd be thirty on her next birthday. Hard to believe. He still remembered her as the wide-eye young college student so enthusiastic about so many things.

He smiled as he let his gaze trail down the length of her. She wore short white shorts, almost indecently skimpy. Attire like that was suited only for the beach in his country. These revealed a long length of tanned legs dotted with grass. The shorts fit like a second skin. For a moment he wished she would turn so he could see how they hugged her bottom.

The yellow tank top she wore enhanced the honey tone of her skin.
