CHAPTER NINETEEN
Suzanne and the Doctor
F rom her desk at the Kessler Institute, Suzanne Sutton dialed the number for Josephine Rinaldi again, and again the call went directly to voice mail. She hung up without leaving another message. There was no pointâthe daughter refused to talk to her. Whenever diplomacy had failed her in the past, Suzanne had no regrets about taking stronger measures, but in this case, she wasnât sure what more she could do. Sheâd already gotten the woman fired, and suggested bringing charges of kidnapping, but their attorney, Matthew Dawson, said there was no legal basis for it. While he agreed the daughter had made a poor decision, it wasnât a criminal one. However, he did say there was a good chance he could sway a judge to remove her as her fatherâs conservator and was moving forward with a petition. Suzanne hoped for a favorable ruling but there was no guarantee. She needed a back-up plan and tapped her pen on the desktop, trying to think of one.
I must be overlooking something. Some way to leverage this.
She hated the idea of calling Reginald Howell. They were already far too deep in that manâs debt, but if this petition failed it might be the only option. The man had deep connections and few qualms about getting his hands dirty when it came to problem solving. She couldnât see another way to ensure the outcome at this point. Her mouth twisted in preparation to deal with him again. She reached for the phone just as her intercom buzzed, so she answered it instead. âYes?â
âI have a Doctor Peterson on the line requesting patient records.â
The name sounded familiar. âIâll talk to him.â When the call clicked over to her, she said. âThis is Suzanne Sutton. May I help you?â
âHi. Iâm calling about a former patient of yours. Thomas Rinaldi.â
Suzanne snatched up the receiver. âHave you seen him? Is he all right? Dr. Kesslerâs very concerned.â
âIn that case, itâs probably best if I speak to Doctor Kessler directly. Can you connect me?â
âI⦠Yes, of course,â Suzanne replied, remembering her place. She had no business asking about a patientâs condition. âPlease hold.â She rang Adrianâs office, mentally chanting, pick up, pick up, pick up.
He did.
âI have Dr. Peterson on the line calling about Thomas Rinaldi. He wants to talk to you.â
âPut him through.â
Suzanne connected the call but didnât hang up. Instead, she covered the mouthpiece and continued to listen in.
âKessler here.â
âYes, hello, thank you for taking my call. I examined a recent patient of yours today. Mr. Thomas Rinaldi. You may recall that I diagnosed him with Alzheimerâs before referring him to you, and he appeared to be entering advanced stages of the disease, but now⦠well, to be honest, now Iâm not sure what to think. When I examined him today, he displayed no signs of dementia.â
Suzanneâs eyes flew wide and she choked back a sharp intake of breath.
Peterson continued, âI pulled my notes and his old MRIâs, and which clearly showed markers of the disease.
