Seven

Amanda climbed into Jason’s lap and snuggled against him. Nuzzling his neck, she could feel the warmth of his thighs just beneath her.

“So tell me…” she said, gently kissing him on the cheek. “What’s the real deal here?”

Honestly, she wasn’t here to pry. Not totally, anyway. But before they left their best friend in California, Amanda and Connor both wanted to make sure he was one hundred percent alright.

“No real deal,” Jason shrugged. “Everything’s pretty good.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah, seriously.”

There was no enthusiasm. No conviction in his reply. Amanda slid her arms over his shoulders. She pulled back a little so she could stare into his eyes.

“The job’s okay?”

Jason hesitated. Shrugged. “A little slow but it’ll pick up.”

Half a year ago, he’d left for the west coast on a business opportunity he “couldn’t pass up.” Since then, neither she nor Connor had heard much about it. From talking on the phone, Connor derived enough to know that Jason’s business partner had dropped out. And that he was trying to make the whole thing work on his own.

“You know you can tell us anything, right?”

He chuckled, probably trying to play it off. But Amanda wouldn’t let him.

“I know.”

“And after the time we just spent together?” Amanda added. “You and I are connected now. The same way you can Connor have always been connected.” She glanced at the ceiling for a moment, then smiled slyly. “Not to mention physically connected in lots of other ways too.”

Jason chuckled and shifted beneath her. “Oh, believe me… I’m very aware.”

“Good.”

Amanda got up and tossed him his boxers. He slid them on while she paced the living room for a bit, then she turned to face him.

“Alright,” she shrugged. “If everything’s cool then we’re actually really happy for you.”

She punctuated her statement with a warm smile. Jason looked back at her, his expression full of guilt. His shoulders slumped, and his mouth opened like he wanted to tell her something.

After several seconds of silence, she went to him. Kneeling next to him on the couch, she took his hand.

“Honey, just say it.”

Jason breathed in deeply for three whole seconds then let out a long, resigned sigh. “Okay, fine. I lost the business.”

There. It was out there. He looked somewhat better for it though. Like someone had taken a thousand-pound weight from his shoulders.

“I’ve been waiting tables for the last two months, just to make rent. Trying to figure something else out, but nothing so far.”

It was a shame, losing the business. A hard admission. Amanda wanted to hug him, and make it all better, but she wanted him to keep talking too.

“What happened?” she asked gently.

“Kyle gave up, probably three and half months ago. Couldn’t keep up with his end of the funding.” He shrugged. “After that I tried keeping things afloat by myself, but it’s just too hard here. There’s too much overhead. Too much expense.”

“So then why’d you come out here to begin with?” Amanda asked. She hoped the question didn’t come out wrong, but she genuinely wanted to know.
