Chapter Five

Poring over the daily intelligence reports, Patrick let out a small sigh of relief that everything appeared to be in order. He’d been afraid all week that something would come up at the last minute that would cause him to have to delay the weekend vacation he’d planned, but so far, his luck had held out. He kept his fingers crossed that no last-minute assignments or meetings would pop up.

He’d been on the verge of deciding to go home early, hoping to get a head start on the traffic. But a knock on the door, followed by the entry of a scowling Jake told Patrick that he wouldn’t be going anywhere for the time being.

“Why haven’t I heard from you?” Jake asked, closing the door behind him.

“There’s been a delay in Lieutenant Allen getting the latest figures from Kandahar, but I’ve sent a request with the information I’ve gathered thus far. I think you’ll find―”

“That’s not what I’m talking about, and you know it.” Taking a seat across from Patrick’s desk, Jake’s glare grew more intense. “It’s been over a month since you’ve reported back to me regarding Craig. Why haven’t you been keeping me up to date? I want to know what you’ve discovered.”

Patrick kept his eyes on his hands clasped together in front of him. “I haven’t kept you up to date because there’s nothing to report. Craig’s not your guy. I don’t think he’s the one behind the leaks to the newspaper.”

“Oh, yeah? And how do you know that?”

“I’ve questioned him.” When Jake gave him a skeptical look, Patrick protested, “I did! I didn’t ask him outright ‘Are you leaking stories to the Chronicle’? But I believe I’ve gotten to know him well enough to be able to say with full confidence that Craig isn’t the kind of person who would betray the army like that.”

Jake flashed a sardonic smile. “Yeah, I think I have an idea just how well you’ve gotten to know Craig Harwood. You’ve gotten too close, and your judgment’s been compromised.”

“You’re the one who told me to get to know Craig, and now you’re complaining I’ve gotten too close.” Patrick let out a bitter laugh. “I’ve gotten close enough to do the job you assigned me to do, and I’m telling you, Craig’s not behind the leaks.”

“I don’t remember asking you to fuck him as part of your assignment.”

“That’s none of your damn business,” Patrick snapped. “I’ve told you everything I know regarding Craig and the leaks. Nothing else about Craig concerns you.”

“Anything regarding people who leak confidential information to the press concerns me. And if you can’t see that Craig is probably one of those people, then you’re no longer of any use to me.”

For a moment, Patrick felt relieved that he no longer had to spy on Craig, but the stony expression on Craig’s face told him the matter was far from over. “So, what happens now?”

“Nothing you have to worry about any longer.” Jake rose from his seat. “It’s really too bad you dropped the ball on this, Patrick.
