Advice

“You going to Friday night Mass?”

Ric paused in the kitchen doorway and turned to regard his mom. “Actually, I was going to spend some time in my room, being quiet.” He needed some space to think, something that wasn’t always easy when his mom was around, especially this last week. The cold war was still on, and it was starting to get on his nerves. He was sick and tired of walking on eggshells all the time.

She pursed her lips. “Have you been to church this week?”

Ric sighed. “Yes, Mom. I went on Wednesday.” He had a sneaking suspicion she already knew, however. Uncle Matt must have been in touch by now. He waited for her to say more, but when nothing else was forthcoming, he made his escape to the sanctuary of his bedroom, the attic room that had been his sole domain as a kid, being the only boy. His sisters had not had that luxury.

He closed the door behind him and drew in a long, deep breath.

Not sure how much more of this I can take.

Since his talk with his uncle, Ric had tried to spend time in quiet reflection, seeking answers, but he was beginning to get desperate. It wouldn’t be long before Mom would be asking what he was going to do about entering the priesthood, and Ric was no nearer to an answer. He respected his uncle tremendously, but he had to admit, Matt was seeing things from one particular viewpoint. Not that there was anything wrong with that, but what Ric needed right then was advice from someone who wasn’t blinkered.

Then it struck him. He knew someone who fitted the bill.

Ric pulled his phone from his pocket and scrolled through his contacts. He pressed Call, his heart hammering while he waited for it to connect.

“Hey, Ric. Nice to hear from you.”

The cheery note in Alex’s voice made him breathe easier. “Hey, Alex. I need to ask you a favor.”

“Sure, go for it.”

“Will you and Nick be home tomorrow afternoon?”

“Hang on, let me check.” There was a muffled conversation, then Alex was back. “Sure. Why? You wanna come see us?”

“If that’s okay.” He held his breath.

“Yeah, ’course it is. We’d love to see you. Oh, wait up, Nick is talking at me.” Another pause. “Nick says why don’t you come for lunch? About twelve thirty, one-ish?”

“That sounds great.” Ric exhaled.

“Cool. Let me give you our address and some directions.”

Ric grabbed a notepad and pencil, and scribbled down the information. “Thanks, Alex. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Looking forward to it.”

They said their goodbyes and Ric disconnected. He stared at the phone in his hand, feeling calmer. Let this help, Lord. Use my friends to speak to me.

He prayed for wisdom.

Ric switched off the engine and stepped out of the car onto the driveway. Alex appeared in the doorway, smiling.

“Right on time. Nick made fresh lemonade. He figured it’d be perfect in this weather with tons of ice.”

Ric nodded. It was a hot, humid day, the temperature having climbed into the nineties.
