Chapter 4

Izzy

I walked into the food court, wanting to grab something to eat, when I heard two familiar voices. It was Gregor and Killian. Talking together.

I didn’t slip in when I saw the men together. A part of me just wanted to hear what was going on without me there. Something told me that they were talking about me, and I wanted to hear what they had to say.

My heart skipped a beat as I slipped into the hidden alcove of the cafeteria. The place for people like me to still eat in the clutch of people, but safely so that we couldn’t hurt anyone. It was a new addition.

I could be in this sheltered area and still see and hear people around me. But I didn’t want to see now. Or rather, I didn’t want to be seen. I found an out of sight corner and sat down, just to listen to Killian and Gregor. They were deep in conversation, sitting across from each other at a table.

“It’s not your fault, you know.” It was Killian’s voice.

“I can’t help it, Kill. I can’t keep my mind off of her.” Gregor seemed upset. I fought the sudden urge to run around the divider and wrap him up in my arms. I wanted to hear more about what was going on.

“Of course, you can’t.” Killian sounded smug.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Gregor shifted. I could hear him move. I assumed he was looking directly at Killian now with his piercing blue eyes.

“You ever read about what she can do?” Killian asked. He sounded curious and I could feel my chest tense up. In a short span of time, there had been too much of these guys running into each other and talking about what I could do without knowing I was around.

“Not really.”

“You should.”

“Does it matter?”

I’m pretty sure Killian nodded, even if I couldn’t see him for sure.

“Yeah. It kind of does.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Look, I’m just trying to help you. I brought some things you need to see.”

“Is this some kind of joke?” Gregor scoffed. “If it is, it’s really not funny.”

The shuffle of paper started a moment of silence. I twitched. I had an idea of the kind of research that Gregor was being shown. The draw that I could have on guys.

But I wasn’t doing that. I knew that I wasn’t doing that. I couldn’t be. I would know if I was, wouldn’t I?

I groaned. There was no denying the fact that three guys seemed to be fighting over me. This was impossible to handle in even the best of circumstances. And somehow, deep down, I knew that they were going to keep fighting. As if I didn’t have a choice but to pick one of them.

Gregor’s voice was softer when he finally spoke again. “You really think that’s what she’s doing?”

“That’s what all of them do. They can’t help it. It’s in their nature. They need to feed off of people’s magic, so they’re given tools to help make that happen.
