Lydia ran all the way back to the handsome townhouse Colonel Forster had taken for his much younger wife for the summer. She ran up the stairs to her room and threw her belongings into a trunk, including all the new bonnets and dresses she had bought during her time in Brighton. Lydia could not contain her joy. Mrs Wickham! Lord, how droll that sounded. She could hardly keep from laughing! How dear Harriet Forster would scream with hilarity when she discovered what Lydia and Wickham had done.

Lydia turned to her desk and drew out a paper and a pen. Dabbing the pen in ink, she scribbled a letter to her dear friend:
