Adam arrived at his father’s home, parking his car and hearing voices yelling. A woman screamed. Running up the front steps he entered the foyer to find Darlene screaming at Detective Moran, while he held her wrists to stop her assaulting him.

“What the hell is going on?”

“She’s having a bit of a fit for some reason.”

“He can’t come here and invade my home with his officers. He needs a warrant,” Darlene yelled.

“Darlene. Step back before he arrests you for assault.”

“He needs to leave,” she snapped.

“He has permission to search the house.”

“Not from me,” she snarled. “I want him out. I’m going to call my…”

“Shut the fuck up, Darlene, and come with me to the lounge. Let them do their job.”

“I’m not…”

Adam grabbed her hand hurrying her into the lounge, nodding to Moran to continue his search.

“He doesn’t need your permission. He has Adam’s permission to search. He has nothing to hide. Do you?”

“No, of course not,” she muttered, slumping into a chair, sulking.

“Why all the noise, then?”

“Where is Mark’s son?”

“Have you taken a pregnancy test yet?”

“No.”

“Do you need me to buy you some or take you to the doctors?”

“Why are you being so nice to me? Who are you?”

Adam shook his head. “You know who I am. Where are Carter and Mike?”

“I know who you said you were… her eyes travelled up his body, reaching his face. “I remember you playing football…”

“Fun times which are over.” Adam sat down. “I’m…”

“Duggan,” said Moran from the door.

“Yes, Detective?”

“Could you come with me a moment, please.”

“You stay here, Darlene. We’ll continue our conversation in a moment.”

Adam stood following Moran to his father's wing of the house. “We found the murder weapon.”

“You sure?”

“The coroner told me what to look for. Though we’ll need to check with forensics, I have a feeling…”

“Show me, please. Where did you find it?”

“In his walk-in wardrobe under the carpet. One of the crime scene team found some blood and… found this?”

He held up the bag with a sharp knife inside. The handle was engraved.

“I’ve seen this somewhere before. Damn… last week when I was stabbed. The handle is the same.”

“Shit. You’re right. Meaning your stabbing… which started all this crap is connected to his death.”

“I need to talk to Eilish, and you need to check your files. I have a feeling I know who did this,” he replied.

“Well, at least it will close your case and this one, if you’re right and can prove it,” said Moran.

“You need to get that security tape cleaned up for proof. What I want to know is what the design on the handle means and who the hell it belongs to.”

“I sure as hell don’t need any more complications, Adam.”

“Keep a close eye on Darlene. I need to go update Liam, presuming I have permission now?”

“Yes. You told Malachy?”

“Yeah. He wasn’t pleased. It’s been a rough few days. Oh, and you need to know Kevin Truit is still alive as well. Not a word to anyone, yet and you sure as hell didn’t hear it from me,” he smirked at Moran’s slack jaw.
