Sarahâs lungs became tighter and tighter with every minute they got closer to the law offices of Jennings, Morrow and Smith. As they pulled to a stop in front of the large building located on the outskirts of town, she felt beside herself and could hardly breathe.
Sheâd gotten Colton into this mess, and she couldnât let him take the fall for her. No, she wanted to be there when he talked to Alfred Jennings. She couldnât send Colton onto the battlefield alone. It wasnât right.
âI need to talk to Jennings, Colton,â Sarah announced, resolve solidifying inside her.
Colton glanced at her. âI donât think thatâs a good idea. Your face is all over the news.â
She knew what the consequences would beâfor both of them. And if the police came after Colton, she fully intended on telling them this was all her doing and that sheâd coerced him in some way to participate.
âThis is my mess,â she told him. âI want to be a part of this.â
âSarah, Jennings could call the police. This could be like walking into the police station and it will undoubtedly get you arrested.â
Sarahâs stomach squeezed at hearing the words out loud. But she couldnât back down. âI know. But I donât want to sit in the car with Buzz. Iâm no safer being away from you while youâre doing these investigations than I am being with you.â
Coltonâs jaw tensed, and he said nothing for a minute. Finally, he shrugged. âItâs your choice. I advise against it, but I canât stop you.â
Sarah released her breath. âThanks. Iâm going.â
Colton glanced into the backseat. âWhat about Buzz?â
âI was thinking he could wait in the truck.â
âWhile we go into the office building?â
âActually, Loretta told me that Jennings has a hot dog every day for lunch from his favorite stand outside the building. Regardless of the weather, his health, anything. Heâs a creature of habit.â She glanced at her watch. âWe should be able to catch him there. If we park close enough, we can keep an eye on Buzz also.â
âIt sounds like a plan.â
As Colton looked for a parking space, Sarah borrowed his phone and looked up Alfred Jenningsâs picture. She found it easily and studied the image of the man. He appeared to be in his late sixties. He had reddish-brown hair, ruddy skin, and he looked about twenty pounds overweight.
Colton parallel parked in front of the building. âYou stay here, boy. Okay?â
Buzz whined.
Colton cracked his window and glanced at Sarah. âYou sure youâre good with this? Itâs not too late to change your mind.â
âYeah, Iâm sure.â She wasnât positive where her courage came from. But she was determined to be an active part of this investigation. Colton wasnât going to be out here alone anymore. She nodded toward the distance. âThere he is.â
Colton followed her gaze until it stopped on Alfred Jennings. Just as Loretta had said, the man stood beside a hot dog stand and pulled some money from his wallet before being handed his lunch, wrapped in aluminum foil.
