Chapter Twenty-Eight

Anika

Maimie was in the living room when I came downstairs the next morning. “Hi, Maimie.”

“Good morning, Anika. How are you?” She set down the book she was reading.

“Good.” I sat down next to her. I had some things I wanted to talk to her about. “Can we talk?”

“Of course.”

“How did you know Pappy was the one?” I asked her.

She smiled and picked up the brush that was lying on the table. I turned around and she began brushing my hair. “I just knew. He made me smile and laugh. He was smart and funny. My heart knew. I can’t explain it.”

“You never had any doubt?”

“No. I was always certain.” She continued to brush my hair softly. “You like this guy a lot, don’t you?”

I sighed. “Yeah.”

“More than you’ve admitted?”

I was quiet for a minute, scared to actually tell someone. “I think I love him, but is that possible? He’s not one of us. Maybe it’s just the succubus in me talking.”

“Maybe…but I doubt it. We don’t always fall in love with our own kind.”

“I can’t be with him, Maimie. I’d kill him. And I can’t not be with him.”

“Mmmm. It’s not easy.”

“So what do I do?”

“That’s something you have to figure out, darlin’. As much as I’d like to tell you that your life will be simpler if you marry an incubus, I won’t. Just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s right. How did the date with Jude go?”

I shrugged. “It was okay, we fooled around, but then I told him I didn’t want to have sex, and he got annoyed.”

“So you didn’t have sex?”

Most kids would probably freak out if their grandma asked them this question, but not me. Sex was a normal topic of conversation in our house. “No. Not that a part of me didn’t want to, but there was just something missing.”

“Then it wasn’t meant to be.” She set the brush down.

I turned toward her and rested my head on her shoulder. “How do I know?”

“Oh, Anika, you’ll know.”

I had a feeling that I already knew. Now I needed to talk to Maimie about the other thing. I took a deep breath and said, “Mom and Dad are hiding something.”

“Like?”

“I don’t know. Is there anything going on?”

Maimie’s brow wrinkled in worry. “As part of The Siren, there is always something going on, but I know of nothing crucial.”

“When we were working the other night, someone mentioned another succubus who threatened us.”

Maimie didn’t look surprised. “As you can imagine, there are succubi that don’t like us. We do get threatened.”

“Have you ever been hurt?”

“Once, but as you can see I’m fine.”

“Do you know who is mad at my parents?” I asked.

She put her hand on mine. “I imagine it’s Lauren. We have all been trying to catch her for a while now.”

“Should I be worried?”

“No. She’ll be caught.”

Even though Maimie smiled, there was something missing. She wasn’t being completely honest and that worried me.
