âIs Miles bringing Jaxsonâs car over here?â I asked.
âYeah.â
âBut I have his keysâ¦.â I pointed out.
âMiles has another set,â she said.
I looked back at the sound of banging pots and pans.
âUhâ¦Jaxson is cooking breakfast,â I said under my breath and stared at the man in my kitchen.
Jesus. He was perfect.
âOhh! You need to latch onto that man! I swear girl!â Ray nearly yelled .
I laughed and continued watching him as he cracked open eggs into a bowl and then started stirring them with a fork. âWe are just friends.â
âOh, whatever! You canât lie to me bitch. That man would do anything for you and thatâs saying something,â she said.
I smiled and lowered my voice so that only she could hear me. âBut you know why we canât be more.â
She sighed emphatically. âYeah, yeah. I know. Itâs just sad that it has to be that way.â
I inhaled deeply and rubbed my temples. âYeahâ¦â
âOh! We need to talk about this weekend!â she said and I laughed at her ability to change the subject so quick.
âAre you coming with Miles over here?â I asked.
âYeah, so Iâll see you soon. Tell Jaxson to make sure he cooks enough for us, too!â she said and then hung up before I was able to respond.
âOkâ¦â I said anyway and pulled the phone away.
I leaned up to sit the phone on the coffee table and then turned around until I was kneeling on the couch with my arms rested on the back, âRay said to make sure you cook enough for her and Miles.â
Jaxson poured the eggs into the frying pan. âThey better hurry up then.â
I smiled. âHow do you know your way around my kitchen anyway?â
He turned and sat the bowl in the sink and rinsed them out . âI can usually find my way around a kitchen. I spent enough time in my motherâs that itâs almost just second nature.â
I smiled. âDo you talk to your mom often?â
Once the bowl was rinsed out, he grabbed the pack of bacon and sliced it open. âSometimes, but not as much as I should.â
âWhat about your dad?â I asked.
He threw the empty package away and then put the slices of bacon in a separate frying pan. âI donât talk to him. Not since he left me, my brother, and mom when I was younger.â
I blinked in shock, how did I never know this? âWow, Iâm sorry.â
He turned to the sink, and twisted the faucet on to wash his hands, âItâs ok. Iâm not fucked up about it now.â
Then it hit me. âWait. You have a brother?â
Jaxson dried his hands off and then shut the water off before he turned to face me, crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned against the counter. âI do.â
I sat up straighter. This was a new side to Jaxson that I hadnât seen or asked about, but I was curious.
âIs he younger or older?â
He uncrossed his arms, âWe are twins, but Iâm an hour older.â
My jaw dropped. âYou have a freaking twin?!â
He laughed .
